I was just changing my fender pickguard and took the backplate off and noticed it has 3 springs. It came with .09's so I was wondering if I put on 10's would I need to go up to 5 springs? Anyone ever set-up their own strat?

I'm not an expert but since noone else answered...

No, I'm quite sure you don't have to use 5 springs from going to 010, 3 should be enough but you can always mount extra springs if you feel you want extra tension when using the whammy bar.

If you go for 012 or 013 springs you'd want to use either more or thicker springs I guess.

All guesses from my side since I don't know from own experience.

There is a way to calculate the force of the strings depending on their thickness vs. the oppsite force of the springs (number of springs and their force).
Depending on what springs you have since they come in different tensions, three strong springs could apply more tension than five weaker springs.
You could probably find this formula using google.
