Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Big Band Funk by Diego Budicin

Hi GMC.

I’ve been working on this lesson for a few months.
I started with Gabriel’s advice and then I stopped because it was very difficult to progress.
A few weeks later, I started again trying to improve it.
I published a topic on the forum to get advice and opinions.

Monica, Todd, Klasain and Diego asked me to correct the timing and improve some sequences. I did 3 REC of my work. I could have done more but the game can be endless on GMC. I am aware of my level and I could never make a REC with the exceptional dynamics of Diego.
I thank all 4 of you, it made me aware of some things that I had not taken into account.

I’ve been concentrating hard these last few weeks, that’s the end result.
There are some notes that should have sounded longer, some notes that sound weird but I gave the best of me.

I want to move on now.

Hi Manu!

First of all, I want to congrats you on all your hard work and your great attitude. What you have done these weeks, all the tiny details that you had the patience to listen to and improve (and I'm very demanding when it's about details), brought your playing to a different level. I'm very proud of you! smile.gif

0:18 - 0:24 - Very nice played this section. Now I can hear all the notes in a good way.

0:42 - I love the fact that you fixed this part. See, it was just a right hand problem. Now, with a faster right hand movement (after the slide), you play that note at the right time.

0:48 - 0:51 - You played great this lick. It sounds clear. The only thing that would make this shine more would be to add a crescendo to it.

Now a few things that I think could be improved.

Accents - to be honest, I liked more how you put the accents in your previous take. I miss that very strong accents.

Dynamics - it's very hard to emulate Diego's playing, but not impossible (at least get as close as possible). So, from the dynamic point of view, you need a little more work.

Timing - There are a few moments when you hurry a little the timing.

0:24 - 0:26 - this lick doesn't sound perfect. It needs to be played more clearly (mostly at the end of the lick).

Today you get an 8 from me. Seven for the overall technique and 1 because this time you added an extra focus and time to take care of many details. I really want to reward your hard work.

PS: Here is the link where you guys can see how much work Manu put into this lesson. It's amazing how many details he succeeded to improve in a few weeks.

Wow - the difficulty of this one is not to be underestimated. This is quite an accomplishment Manu 😎

Overall you are doing very well here and I agree with Monica that your pace of progress is scary cool.

There are minor glitches in timing and hand sync, but I am pretty sure you would easily nail that with more practice time (I don't blame you for wanting to move on though).

The only major improvement opportunity I see here is to go all in with right hand dynamics like Diego does. Your right hand still sounds a bit hesitant as if you were practicing - and not performing.

I think Diego's trick here is to add quite a bit of attack with the thumb joint movement - to complement the wrist movement. This is effective because the wrist places the pick in the ballpark while the thumb joint gives the final push.

If he tried to do it all with the wrist it would be less controlled and the large movement needed would risk hitting unwanted strings. Also, the thumb joint movement can actually move away from the strings/guitar - thereby minimising the risk of hitting unwanted strings.

You rock man, it's an 8 from me 👊

You have made AMAZING progress on this one. You've managed to incorporate all of the changes from a variety of voices and put it all together for a really cool take. I think this one has the most "feel" of any of the takes so far. I can sense that you are letting yourself go a bit deeper into the groove. I'm not sure what approach you are taking, or even if it's intentional but either way it's working. Playing Funk is very different than playing something like neoclassical metal, as you well know, and not just different in terms of technique, it's an entirely different vibe. You connect with the vibe better on this one than any of the others i've heard.

Your work on this is DONE my friend!! Solid 8 from me.

I would suggest one thing to try in terms of your right hand when playing this style. As kris mentioned, the right hand is still a pinch hesitant due mostly to using simply proper picking technique. Just an idea to try, find a very physically heavy pick made of something like metal/stone/etc. One of the VonHotch picks would be perfect. The heavy weight of such a pick forces the hand towards weighted strikes which are something that can give a dynamic feel for this type of track. it's a simple thing to change, just something to try smile.gif

Onward!!
