Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Beginner Blues Rock by Guido Bungenstock

Fantastic lesson from Guido. Something very different from what I usually play.

Hi Carlos!

I think you had a great idea of choosing a lesson which is different than what you usually play. This is the best way to develop your skills.

Try when you learn a lesson to spend a little more time to capture the details. If you try to copy the full concept (picking strength, picking direction, ornament, dynamics, etc), it will help you arrive at the point where you will get full profit from each lesson.

0:06 - 0:20 and 1:15 - 1:27 - picking direction assignment. If you do not use the same picking direction as Guido, this part will never have the same feel. Also, I would like to hear all the dead notes played better (as example - in the main riff, after the first two notes the dead note isn't audible).

Bending - at this moment, this is the big issue in your take. Your bending technique looks good, but you need to get better at hitting the correct pitch. Almost all your bends sound bad (0:26, 0:55, 1:00, 1:06, 1:07). Your pitch control needs work.

1:09 - you rushed this note

0:20 - recheck the tab because you played wrong notes

0:21 - 0:32 - this part doesn't sound good if it's played only with downstroke picking (it sound square). Make a comparison between your take and the original take and you will see how huge difference there is in sound.

0:34; 0:46 - try to play the final slides. It's a detail that should not be skipped because it gives a cool flavor.

0:48 - 0:52 - fix the picking direction.

0:54 - this fast run doesn't sound clear enough.

I liked your energy from this take but you need to work more for the rest of the things that I pointed out. You get a 6 from me.

Monica has given some great feedback as always. No need to repeat what she has already said.

I did enjoy your groove on this take smile.gif You clearly are enjoying the piece and that's crucial imho. If you are not "feeling it", it shows. Clearly you are feeling the vibe on this one. it's a good listen and a good watch. it was just fun to see you play it. smile.gif

i did notice the technical issues Monica pointed out, and especially, the bending to pitch. This one thing yanks me out of a take more than anything. It's like reading a book and seeing a word spelled wrong, all of the sudden, the reader/listener is pulled out of the story as the critical part of the brain takes over. Bending to pitch is a tricky thing and does take time to sort. I noticed it particularly at

:44 and :55 seconds in.

The good news is you clearly have a strong foundation of solid technique and timing. I think you can play just about anything you choose to learn. This one though, needs to go back in the oven for a bit more bake time, but I look forward to your next take!!

Todd

Hats off to you mate, you played this style very well - especially considering it's new to you.

The big issue here is bending accuracy as pointed out - you need to fix this in oder to sound like a pro.

This is a very rhythmic melody with clear start and end points, you do a good job with the timing of the start points. However you could be more precise with the rests / silences.

All in all very promising, it's a 7 from me!

Hey again!

You did that very well. I think Guido's lessons fit you very well.

You're only missing a few very small tempo details, but nothing serious. Monica has already marked exactly the small details you can work on to have a perfect shot.

Keep up the good work!
