Alternate picking

iv been working on my alternate picking for a bit now...but im not sure whether your meant to angle your pick down towards the ground whilst picking upwards, and angling your pick up towards you when picking downwards ..or keep your pick straight and just go up and down.....if any one understands wat im on about, cud they giv me som advice please???
