Its the same modeling technology as the Pod XT Live which I own - in general line 6 modeling is awesome, you get a lot of versatility for your money, I'm a convert. Some people prefer the real thing, your mileage may vary. In my opinion the Line6 Spiders are toys. For practicing at home I'd rather get the kind of POD that Andrew has and for playing live I'd get a real valve amp for that kind of money.
I have a Line6 Guitarport and I don't really see the use for 12 modeling amps and diffrent cabinets, I switch between two amp models and always keep the same cab in mine. And all the hundereds of factory settings, what's that for? I rather play Pantera or Hendrix with te sound I can tweak out from my own amp. I bet that with the Spider amp many users just like myself and up using only one sound anyway. And in that case it's better to go for a Vox, Laney, Marshall or whatever from the start. As a compromise amp I might appretiate it, meaning you don't need the best for home practice but you need something. And you don't need the best for live playing but you need something and you're willing to compromise with the sound. If I was a teenager, still looking for the sound I like and need some pretty descent stuff to rock with this might be right for me. But a guess is that I'd settle for one a the cheaper models though
