A New Or Second-hand Bass

And I want to play some rock songs on it. A friend of my said that I can get a better second-hand bass for the same money as a new bass that is much worser. So what do you guyz recommend? What kind of bass are you thinking of? I though that a fender standard p-bass would fit me. It kosts new about 500 euro. That is the amount that I wanna spend on it.
