Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!
QUICK TIPS TO PREPARE YOU FOR BATTLE
*Make sure you get both hands in the shot when shooting your video*Make sure you use a metronome for the first several Missions and that the metronome can be heard.*After you complete a mission, shoot me a PM and let me know it's ready and I'll give you a debrief! These are pass / fail, so if you pass you BADGE UP and if not, I'll give you some feedback and you head in to the breach once again.
*The first several missions are VERY simple. They are just to get you used to the bootcamp process.
*Most importantly, there is NEVER a speed requirement in bootcamp. I want you to push yourself to play as brisk as you can, but NEVER at the expense of precision. If you find you are missing a note here and there, slow down a bit. Speed is just a byproduct of precision so my goal is to make you a very precise player. At that point, speed just happens.

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

Which you will play SUPER PERFECT!. Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you, no points for speed, only points for playing in a precise manner as speed is simply a byproduct of precision) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. Make sure to EMBED the video by clicking on INSERT SPECIAL ITEM above the smiley face and then you'll get a drop down menu. Click on INSERT YOUTUBE VIDEO and follow the instructions in the Pop Up Menu. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP! I must say when I hit the recording button I make ALOT more mistakes and Im glad, I have to fight this, practise this, so it wont be hapenning in future.

Here is my mission 1 at 100 BMP, also tried palm muting mid way



What I think might be wrong by looking at other tutorials and community members here:
- my palm should be lower on the bridge ?
Im 6'5 not sure if that has to do with it.

Welcome to the Fight Soldier!!! You are off to a great start!!! You have very good fluid motion in your picking which is great to see. Also, your right and left hand are in strong synch. Also, you are sitting in proper classical position which is great to see as many folks start off sitting "side saddle" which can get in the way. Further, you are using adequate gain/distortion which is a huge plus! In addition you did a great job of shooting the video allowing me to see both hands and it's properly embedded! Lastly, you are using the BRIDGE pickup which is also the right way to go. You've got a lot of the things that I normally have to correct already working in the right way!!!

Only a couple of things to address. Your palm mute position is in fact a bit high. Try to place your palm roughly in the middle of the bridge. This will feel strange at first but your hand will get used to it. That way, you can simply rotate the wrist to hit any string instead of having to move the entire hand.

Secondly, your drifting just a bit in terms of your synch with the metronome. Try to make sure you are always playing on the beat. One way to do this is to speed up the metronome to the point that each time you hear a click, you are making a pick strike. That way you can lock the strike to the beat.

Give me this drill one more time Soldier!! Slow down just a pinch to make sure you can lock in the click to each pick strike. It may sound odd, but there is never a "Speed requirement" in bootcamp. Only a "Precision Requirement". I may ask you to play with more aggression now and again if I think you are underplaying a given bit, but I'll never ask you to hit a certain BPM. Speed is a byproduct of precision and as your precision increases, your speed will rise to meet it.

I browsed a few bootcamps before so I prepared what I saw you told other people in advance:

- always use bridge pickup
- alot of gain
- classical position (very new for me, still awkward but it will get better)
- tried to lower the palm

Heres my second attempt:



I mess up more the slower tempos I believe.
The recording button is still very stressful for me and I make more mistakes recording haha

Well Fought Soldier!!! You are off to a flying Start. Considering that you are not used to playing with a metronome at all, you are doing quite well! Also, I know how tricky "RED LIGHT SYNDROME" can be. It's all going fine and then the RECORD light comes on and bam, it all gets much more complicated. Not to worry though. Just as with anything else, practice is the key. The more time you spend with the metronome and the more time you spend in front of the camera, the more natural it will become.

Before you head in to MISSION 2, I wanted to give you a few pointers on picking in general. Your picking is solid here and it's great to see. I did notice that when you start to speed up, (and this is entirely natural even though we have to fight against it) you start to sort of "pick from the elbow", meaning that your arm tenses up and your no longer picking from the wrist but instead stiffen the arm and pick from the elbow as a fulcrum. This happens to everyone at first so don't worry. It's just something to be aware of as it's one of the first things that must be overcome in order to unlock your potential.

As you speed up, focus on staying relaxed and make sure that you are using your thumb/first finger to move the pick at low speed, then add some wrist motion at higher speed. Resist the urge to let the body tense up and resist the urge to let the arm go stiff thus pick from the elbow.

This is the Demo Vid from Mission 1. Go to about 1:45 in. Focus on my picking hand. Notice that all of the motion is happening at the wrist.




Go back and watch your first pass on your most recent vid and watch the last pass. Notice the position of your hand and arm have changed when you go from slow to fast. Again, this is a natural response, but something that we have to overcome. Just something to be aware of as you move forward.

Sarge thank you so much for feedback,

I try to do it all with thumb/first finger and add wris and to be relaxed.
The tempo is fast for me I know, I just need feedback whether the technique change is what you ment Sarge ?



PS.: Sorry for the low guitar volume with loud metronome I will fix this for next videos.

NAILED IT!!!!! First out of the gate and BAM. Well done Soldier. You took all of the feedback and put it to good use and sorted the Mission like a pro. Technique is on point. Muting, picking, hand synch, pace, it's all there. These first several missions are all about getting you ready for the next level Missions which are a bit mad. There are some missions that are meant to throw curve balls and slow you down, some others are pure speed drills. If a mission feels like it's a finger twister, it's probably not a speed mission. Those are best taken slowly and deliberately. If it feels easy on the fingers, it's a chance to push it to the ragged edge and start shredding.

Well Fought Soldier!!! You are coming along very well!! You are making progress with each Mission which is what I like to see. Good job on your palm mute here! It's placed in the middle of the bridge as it should be. You've adjusted it per previous feedback and it looks very good. Also, your keeping it planted when you change strings. This is one of the hardest things to do if your not used to it. Every Soldier, and I mean, every single one, struggles with this, as I did when I was first starting out. You have adapted very well!! It's already serving you quite effectively.

Also your pick articulation very good. Your not going too deep on each strike. This too is something every single soldier struggles with at some point. Yours truly included. It wasn't until I got my hands on a STYLUS PICK and trained my hand NOT to go to deep beyond the string that I was able to gain some precision/speed. If you run across a stylus pick, I'd suggest grabbing one. It's useless for traverse, but it will teach your hand the minimum amount of pick tip to use. It really helped me.

Can you show me a picture of your pick tip soldier? Also show me how far you are choking up on the pick?

Top notch work Soldier!! You have chose a fine weapon in the JP pick. It's thick, it's pointy, it does not yield to the string, and it's got a beveled edge. Choosing the right tools is really important. Also, your pick grip is very good. Choking up on the pick all the way to the tip is battle ready technique. It also makes Pinch Harmonics easy to hit. the trick for pinch harmonics is to let the string hit the thumb after it strikes the string. Once you get used to it you can hit a pinch pretty much anywhere.

As for this one, very solid work. Your fretting is very good and your hand synch is spot on. You are striking in a good position between the pickups where string tension is reduced. This allows the hand to work a bit less hard. You are palm muting well here but it's almost a pinch to muted as it's started to choke the strings out. It's a fine line between not muting enough, which doesn't allow note separation and muting too much which chokes each note out too much. Don't worry though as you will improve on this as you go forward. There are plenty of missions to work through which will allow you to work on this. You've done well here solider and you are ready for what's ahead!!

Id like to ask your opinion on how to work with it thou.
Would you suggest for example using Stylus pick now exclusively for a few weeks, or rather using it for example 20min/day before each practise with normal pick ? Or ?

Congrats on getting one! It's a very useful tool. I wish everyone would get one honestly as it's very helpful to train the hand. It's useless for string traverse and for most playing. It's just to train the hand not to strike to deep. I'd say use it in your warmup on single strings at a time with a metronome if possible. To train your hand on pick depth. Then switch to your normal pick and try to use the same amount of pick depth. It's just to get your hand in the right spot before you play. make sense?

I have created a new Mute Drill just for my BOOTCAMP SOLDIERS! This one is not for a badge. This is just to help you work on your mute. It's a very simple drill. Just palm mute the bridge, and take your fret hand OFF of the guitar entirely. This will force your palm mute to do all the mute work and show you if there are gaps in your mute. So try it as in the vid, just strike each string a few times, and move on to the next string. Make sure that you don't hear any other string other than the one you are striking. That's the point of this drill. To make sure that you can isolate all of the other strings with your palm mute.

if you notice that you hear other strings ringing, even when you are not striking them, adjust your palm mute angle/position until you find that sweet spot where your palm should be resting. This is the secret sauce folks. Once you sort this out, you won't have to worry about string noise getting in your way, even on our crazy open string licks that span several or all of the strings. It's a quick and simple drill that can really help you isolate any issues with your mute. give it a whirl!!
