Youtube is the main way people find new music these days. It’s crucial to have your music on youtube. Let’s look at what mistakes are common that are preventing you from having your music find new ears.

1.) LACK OF PLANNING
lan your release. Don’t just randomly release your content. Do some research. Google it. Find out when a good time to release a new video. Look at your analytics. When are your fans actually on youtube? Diggins in to your analytics can tell you a lot. It can give you a good idea on when might be the best time of day/week to put out your new video.

2.) NOT STARTING
Don’t be a perfectionist. Just start. You have to actually dive in and make a video and share it. Of course, if it gets very few views, this can be very discouraging. However, you can’t let that get you down. Try to learn from each video. Look at the analytics and see what worked. Leverage that for the next vid.

3.)IMPATIENCE
Don’t get down on yourself if your video does not explode and get put on the first page of youtube and get one million views. There are millions of people putting millions of vids on every day. Your job is to find out what makes your videos unique and leverage that.

4.)G.A.S.
Yes, it hits youtubers just like musicians. GEAR ACQUISITION SYNDROME. “I NEED A 4k CAMERA!!”” etc. The truth is, you can start making videos with nothing more than your phone. Many youtubers who have huge audiences started by just making small videos using nothing but their phone. Don’t let a lack of gear stop you. Use what you have and move forward.

5.)COMPARING YOUR CHANNEL TO A MASSIVE CHANNEL
Many youtubers will compare their own startup channel to some HUGE channel like OLA ENGLUND’s or something similar and wonder why he can make a video about farts and get 300,000 views and you can make a video about something worthwhile and get 10 views. The truth is, that once you have a certain “critical mass” your videos will just do better. However, at first, you can only compete on quality of content.

6.)CONSISTENCY
Just like a major broadcast/cable network, you are a BRAND. If you hate that word, it’s time to get over it. Your brand needs to be consistent. When people sub your channel, they expect a certain type of video, a certain quality of content. Keep it consistent.

7.)PUTTING ADVICE IN TO ACTION
Just watching videos about what to do isn’t enough. You actually have to take action and do the things that are going to make your channel better. It won’t happen by itself, It takes effort. It takes time. There is no way around it. You gotta make th effort.

8.) NOT USING NEW YOUTUBE FEATURES
Youtube is constantly releasing new features. New ways to view your analytics, new ways to help you see what is working and what isn’t. They are always making new versions of the main interface. This isi a good thing. They are trying to create better tools to help you, the creator. Embrace them.

9.)DON’T BE AFRAID TO EXPERIMENT
This is not to say that you should abandon your consistent approach and freak out your fans. This is only to say that within the context of your brand, try new things as possible to see if you get a better response from fans.

10.)NOT ENGAGING WITH YOUR AUDIENCE
It’s CRITICAL to respond to every single comment made by anyone on your youtube channel. Engaging the audience is the only way they know you are really there. Check your comments section every day to see if there is a new chance to engage.

11.)CHANGE THIS UP A BIT
Try a new background. Create a new set to record in. Keep the same overall look if possible as you are maintaining a brand, but within that, feel free to try things to see if they work. New backdrops, lights, props etc.

12.)UPLOAD CONSISTENCY
If you upload three videos a week for a month, then take a month off, your audience may just go away. Try to find a upload schedule that is something you can manage. If you can do 3 vids a week thats great. Not everybody can do that. It’s very very very hard. Whatever your upload schedule is, just keep it consistent as you can.

13.)FAKING IT
Don’t try to be someone else. There is already a FLUFF already an OLA. There are millions of people trying to imitate them. Instead, be yourself. Try to find what makes you unique. This is what will draw people to your channel.

14.)WEARING MIRRORED SUNGLASSES
It’s just a bad idea. It puts two mirrors for the viewers to watch everything behind the camera through the reflection. It’s a bad distraction. Listen to your audience. Don’t record with your doorbell ringing or dark barking either.

15.)KEEP YOUR VIEWERS AT THE TOP OF YOUR AGENDA
They are the core of everything. No viewers means no channel. Without viewers, there is zero point of having a youtube channel. So keep them in mind first. What do they respond to? What do they want to see? Ask them!!

16.)FOCUS TOO MUCH ON VIDEO LENGTH
You may have seen that people are saying you should make 10 minute videos so you can put more adverts in them and make more money. This is pure bunk. You content should determine how long each video is, not the desire to squeeze more adverts and try to hack the youtube algorithm. Instead, keep fluff at a minimum. Each second of video should have a purpose.

17.)SPREADING YOURSELF TO THIN
Trying to be on every social media platform at once, is just exhausting. Also, spreading yourself too thin prevents you from having enough time to grow on any one platform. So pick one or two and focus on them.

18.)BE YOURSELF
Take a moment, and take stock of who you are and what you want to share. That’s what people connect with. If you are faking it, people can tell right away. Don’t do it. Be you.

19.)SCHEDULE
You have to build youtube in to your daily schedule. Otherwise, you may find that you don’t make videos at all for months at a time. Make it part of your everyday life. It’s a Looooong game.

20.)PIMPING PRODUCTS YOU DON”T BELIEVE IN
It’s tempting to push products for affiliate marketing and becoming a shill for other peoples products. This is something that is easy to see and just terrible to watch. You can review products, but just make sure they are products that you might actually use.

I think the option of having videos unlisted is a great tool
It lets you put something up and then get critiques from people you trust.
It means you are finishing a project (which is half the battle) and getting it out there to a small selection of people (so there is a point in making it)

Also well said. Unlisted vids are great to get the thoughts of a select group before going public!
