Hey you said that you had my same setup at one point and a problem I have is that when I hear my guitar and backing through the monitors, the music sounds so off in my car ect..... any tips on keeping the tone similar?


This is a new take and after listening to my first one I realized that I needed to fit better with the vocals... I know the fast part needs work but it's the overall feel that I want to hit before polishing it up.

Nice solo. Real melodic. Its nice to hear that you play some lines that the singer sings with your guitar.

About your system. Some systems have more bass or treble so are less good for mixing. I don't know if its the case for you. Also i don't know your Car system but if its mono then it will also sound different. Because think you have hard left or hard right panned dissapear more in the mono channel.

But every system is different. That is why a lot of producer have systems that don't accentuate the bass etc. They also listen it back on multiple systems and in mono so that it sounds good on most.

Hi Tim! Thanks for listening to the track. I think most of my problems come from the fact that my guitar is too loud before I export mixdown. It sounds good loud in my room but too loud for mixing purposes. Im not sure about my car system but will investigate the style.

I enjoyed yours! Very good sense of melody and it sounds like a solo, not like a bunch of random licks. This is one of the critical bits of being a lead player, a solo should always serve the song, not the player. Nice!

As for your setup, sounds like your saying your mix is sounding different in your car? This is quite common. Car systems are not "flat" and can sound very different than studio monitors. So your guitar track is a bit too quite in the car basically? It could be that the car system has a mid scoop which is common to car audio. Experiment with EQ settings and try several, 10 or 20 in a song for a few seconds each with a bit of boost in the mid range. Play it in the car and see which one you like. Then keep that setting. Of course, this will mostly help in that particular car system. Getting a mix to "travel" is a time honored issue that most folks attack by having a second pair of monitors to switch to in the studio to sound closer to cosumer systems. The small box monitors called ARUA TONEs are built just for this. There other builders who make something similar. Adding a second pair of monitors to switch to during mixing can really improve your mix results. my second pair are presonus eris 3.5

Todd! First of all I loved your solo it has a nice mix of technical playing and with the addition of a few nicely placed "Squealliez" it surely adds to it. I like your tone as well. The Collaborations at GMC are such a cool thing because as a student you can take a break from lessons and apply what you are learning.

The second set of monitors is something I never thought about. I actually have a nice set of speakers here and a few amps Ill arrange in the mean time. Thats a great Idea!

I also have a question for anyone... If I play a solo over a Copyright piece of music, Soundcloud will kick it back. But I have a Reverbnation account that I set up 12 years ago and can stream anything I record from it. Is there a way to get the Reverbnation link to show up in the forums like a Soundcloud/youtube?

I apologize for hijacking your post as I was actually trying to post that solo in the WINTER SONG thread. Truly my bad. I do appreciate you taking a listen!

As for your monitors, just having a second set of small speakers to switch to when working on a mix can be very helpful for getting your mix to "travel" e.g work on various playback systems. You don't have to buy new monitors though, any pair of small home speakers will do the trick. The small box monitors used in pro studios are meant to approximate the sound of a cheap set of hifi speakers. The legendary NS10M monitors with the white speaker cones were actually just standard hifi speakers from yamaha. They were never designed as monitors. So yeah, any small pair will do. Just check your mix on your actual monitors (what are you actual monitors btw?) and then check it on the smaller speakers and adjust. it should
make for a mix that travels a bit better and works in cars etc.

As for reverb. As far as I know there is no way to do that currently. However, you might want to message kris and ask
for it as a feature?
