Hi Alex,
Thanks for this new assignment. Seems interesting and I'm trying to link it with the theory.
Question though:
I can hear comfortably Amin penta over Dmin, Gmin penta over Bb, Dmin penta over Gmin but,..
I cannot figure out Amin penta over F. It sounds weird.
There is not even a F in the Amin pentatonic scale.
(Maybe my instinct is to keep wishing to resolve on a F there - Sounds a bit better though if I resolve on the perfect 5th i.e. C)
I understand we are in Dmin progression. (I VI IV III)
Harmonizing for Natural minor I get: Dm - Em - F - Gm - Am - Bb - C
In principle any of these scales (including Am) should sound in "harmony" as this is the "harmonisation" (Right?)
Am I missing a piece here?
(Better to consult with you before I see my doctor for earing testing
Haha )
Thanks for your guidance.
JPB
I am glad you have asked this question!
The reason I gave you this assignment is so you will be able to hear the difference between modes and shapes!
I purposely put A minor pentatonic over F so you will get a phrygian sound it is not wrong the pentatonic works fine
By doing this exercise you will be able to choose better notes and will start analyzing chords deeper!
What throws you away is E over F we can consider it as a natural 7th if you will be thinking about this progression as F major you will have E natural so the pentatonic is totally fine just have to get use to it and make "smart" note choices!
Would you like me to record a take to give you ideas?
Let me know!
