At present, I have the following configuration which has been pretty much the same for an eternity now: #1 Fender Powerhouse Stratocaster (Standard Tuning) #2 Yamaha Super Flighter (Drop D - DADGBE) #3 Ibanez S470 (Standard D - DGCFAD) I came upon this configuration for it has allowed me considerable flexibility thus far by changing guitars rather than tunings. Therefore, setup can remain optimal without need for constant adjustments. Something which I very much try to avoid on the Ibanez for instance with its floating trem and all! Of the three, I use the Ibanez the most by far and is outfitted with .010 gauge strings. I was considering is it worthwhile to use a more standard tuning for it like EADGBE or even EbAbDbGbBbEb? I am thinking that as I learn new techniques (for me at least) like sweep picking it would be way easier. Is this a valid assumption? It feels a bit floppy really and higher tension on the strings may make such things a bit crisper. On the other side of the coin, I do like it chunky. So, I find myself in somewhat of a dilemma. If that guitar has no floating bridge then it's easy to switch to drop d tuning so no need for a Guitar always in that tuning. In your case you have a floating bridge on the most used guitar so I would us one of these options: Ibanez: E Standard Yamaha: E Flat/D Standard (stoptail bridge so you can switch back and forth with the tuning without a setup needed) Fender: Drop D OR Ibanez: E Flat Fender: D standard Yamaha: E standard/drop d You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction of a forum topic here at GMC that discusses relative merits of brands, gauges etc.? "Strings" is a little too general a search keyword really. I am leaning in the direction of going lighter gauge though as playing the Fender today was quite refreshing after playing .010's for so long. Thankful for the advice as always.
