So here is my recent recording for Ivan's great collaboration. No questions about what people think. I'm just interested in having a few questions answered that I have. Ivan said I need to work on the sound a bit better as the recording is lacking some dynamics and is buzzing a bit. Firstly, Why do the pick sounds come through a lot in one place but not through most the rest of the song? Secondly, what would you do to the sound? Drop off the gain a bit or what? Any other comments on improving my recording? To record I used Caparison TAT2 straight into Toneport UX2 and then I used Gearbox with a Randy Rhodes preset although I took a bit of drive off this as I felt it was too much. I then recorded using Cakewalk Sonar Producer (5 or 6) Can't remember which  Any help would be awesome  Also say if you want how I can improve playing as I want to reach the top

Maybe add a little bit of reverb? and try to use the bridge pickup, it could "open" the sound a little bit

The pick sound is the reflection of your playing mainly. Not always will be heard, it depends on where you are on the fretboard, the angle of pick relative to the string etc. BUT it will depend on the preset also of course.
Watch out when using drive settings on Toneport, it is very difficult to find a good one. When I record with it I prefer not using drive settings at all, it is better to use some sort of pedal then it's presets. I've found Soldano, Marshall and Mesa presets work the best for hi gain, but they don't expect miracles. Any drive settings beyond 6 is unusable for me, and I tend to use the amp simulations with main ovlume to 8, and then play with drive and EQ a little. EQ is generaly terrible, and doesn't reflect real life at all, so watch out. For some good lead sounds some subtle delay and reverb can do you good to make a bigger sound, and throw in a vetta compressor, but I didn't quite found a use combining drive pedals with amps too. SO for me the best combination for leads is something like this> Vetta Comp, strong Echo Delay - subtle, feedback to 1, 2 repeats max, Line6 Reverb - subtle Amps - soldano, marshall, mesa, volume max7, drive max 5, eq - experiment -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Also when you think about it, we all need to improve, you're not the only one, every guitar player has goals like improve runs, work on chords, bends etc, it is a constant struggle that pays out in the end.
