Hey Ivan, you send me this:
QUOTE
Hey Kaz,

about right hand anchoring, it is important not to anchor it too much on the guitar, also it is important to pick more from the wrist of your picking hand, than using the thumb and index hand movements. I created this very bad habit once I was younger, and still working to get rid of it now. When playing for long time, mu thumb, index and right hand in general starts to hurt, because I move it too much. Basically what you need to do is ideally let go all your hand, and move it very fluedly, letting the weight of the hand to the job, while you minimize movements so much that both teh hand and wrist are relaxed as much as possible. This is a hard task indeed, but don't worry, just try focusing on that during practice and it will be OK in a long run.

If you need any specific questions, feel free to post it on my board, I'm doing video responses there.

Cheers mate

I have two questions. Would it be better if I "fix" my thumb and index and just use my wrist, is that what you mean?

About the anchoring, aren't you supposed to let your hand rest on the body of the guitar?

I kinda keep asking things about it because I have some pains in my picking hand, and I think this might be a cause of it!

Thnx Ivan!

Yes it would definitely be better IMO. As I said I sometimes play with only my thumb and index, that is moving only these fingers while the wrist is anchored, and when I do that after a while, my hand and fingers get fatigued, because I move them more than I should. With slow playing it is not a problem, but when you start to do those movements while doing runs, fingers get tired very soon. So I started to change my grip and picking style from scratch a couple of years ago. I started doing all my picking from the wrist, and using different techniques. I've come a long way now, and still doing that thumb and finger movement sometimes, which I think it is not a good thing, because my hand stiffens up pretty quick using that technique. The picking hand should be as relaxed as possible.
So based on that experience I'm telling this to you. I will record tomorrow a small clip showing you how I pick with the right hand so you can choose whatever works best for you mate.

You should let the arm rest on a body a bit, but the wrist and the palm with the fingers should be free to pick the strings.

I just watched my video very closely, and I think I get what you say! Because the "karate side" of my pinky is on the body of the guitar, I pick with my thumb, and not with the wrist.

Thanks Ivan!

These are really good points... Could I have a look at that video response as well?

Thanks.

Hey, Ivan, I've just seen one of your funky style lessons (involving funky strumming)... I'm sure that anchoring there isn't the adequate solution... tongue.gif

You're right mate, with funky strumming the hand should float over the strings all the time.
