What Is The Best Way To "tune Down A Half Step"

I put the guitar on my tuner, and am trying to get the proper tuning for Lian's beginner Slayer lesson. It says to tune down a half step. I adjusted the micro tuners at the back of the bridge and tried dropping the tuning needle from 12 o'clock which is in standard tuning, to 9 o'clock. Is this proper? I don't think so because my guitar sounded nothing like his and was way out of whack! None of the strings sounded in tune with each other. So, I brought it back to standard tuning...and it just doesn't sound right for the lesson. Should I be dropping the tuning with the tuners on the headstock instead of the fine tuners?

If i'm going to tune down a guitar with a fixed bridge, then i simply (after making sure the guitaris is correctly tuned to E) play the 6th fret on the A string, and tune the E string down until it "matches", then tune the remaining strings accordingly.

That is if i dont have a tuner handy. But this method is fast, works well and lets you train your ears.

Problem is...I have a Floyd Rose. Man, I love my guitar, but I hate not having a fixed bridge. I never even use my tremolo. The arm is stuffed in the back of my guitar case and never even gets attached.

AHHH, problems with the floater.. tongue.gif smile.gif Make sure your guitar is in standard tune and the bridge is level with the body of the guitar. Then, you get to use the bar..another tongue.gif , dive bomb the bridge and place a 9 volt battery in the cavity under the fine tuners and release. Make sure you are still in standard tune. Then, tune all strings a 1/2 step down with the tuners and lock it down at the nut. Remove battery and fine tune with the bridge...

Seriously man, I bought a floating bridge guitar as a beginner and learned the hard way... sad.gif Try this method, it works for me! Easiest way I've found. If not, you will need to start at the low E and tune it a 1/2 step up so by the time you get to the high E, the tention will take care of it and get things close.

This is exactly why I bought another guitar with a fixed bridge!

If I could go back in time...I would have gotten a fixed bridge! I don't have problems with the Floyd, it does stay in tune quite well. I just never use it. And since I don't use it...I would like the ease of changing tunings that you have with a fixed bridge.

Then you could fix the bridge for a while, use a piece of wood to block it.
MickeM has done a beautiful tutorial for this, try to find it. smile.gif

I have a question concerning the strings...
I'm using the standard strings from the beginning
is it ok if I tune my guitar half step down or are they too thin or something like that??

Another option incase you're less keen on cutting in your guitar is to get a "Tremolno", has to be a Floyd Rose to fit. They doesn't fit Ibanez floating bridges but maybe there exist other ones for that.
There's also an adjustable piece called "Tremsetter" that's there instead of a spring that will reset the tremolo to it's absolute original position.
I havn't tested any of these, just know they exist, so I can't tell you how good and if they work.

if you are using very thin gauge(0,08 for example) it can get pretty wobbly.
but is fou are using a bit heavier strings, an half step down w'ont be dramatic smile.gif

oh, and welcome to GMC man, have a great time with us laugh.gif
