I was just thinking of posting the same link as VictorUK. There isn't one "right" or best way of micing a cab, you can get many different sounds using different positions around the speaker, putting the mic on-axis or off-axis etc. That video explains many of these aspects and therefore is a must-watch
Can I hook it upto my Pod X3 Live??? Does it have an XLR-input? if so then you could try it, but the unit isn't really meant for a mic-preamp, so the actual preamps may not be very good. I suggest you buy a cheap USB mic-preamp for starters, the cheap ones usually go for around 100-150$. -------------------- Gear:

Well this video helped me alot: http://www.imperialmastering.com/guitartonevid/ You need to find the sweet spot on the amp to get the best tone possible, also you will need a mixer, a m-audio fast track or line6 toneport should do if they have XLR cable inputs you can get different tone by using 2 microphones in different positions or 2 different microphones and mix and match positions. Victor. hehehe!!! I wanted to post the same vid this one has a few advices about it. if you are looking for mic positions. also, he (the man in the video ) explains how to put in face the .waw files without editing. |

Try it with your X3 Live first. I've miked my amp with a SM57 and it sounds surpisingly well. You just have to be tender with the trip pot beside the mike input.
Now I don't remember how I did it for the best sound, if I used "Colsole" to get the best sound out of the amp or something else... Sorry, can't remember exactly and I can't test it right now. ...or if I used "no amp" and the X3 just patched the sound through as picked up with the mike or if the Console acted as a preamp and enhanced the sound. My memory fails me but I only did this once so I guess I'm excused But like I said. Before you head off buying new gear (which always is fun though) you can manage with your POD X3 alone. -------------------- My bands homepage

I just did a quick test, very unscientific just to see what works and what doesn't, nothing fancy
Recorded with a Epiphone LP thgrough a Blackstar HT5 into a slanted Marshall 1960 4x12 cabinet. Miked with a SM57 on the bassy part (from the middle of the speaker radius and a tad more towards the edge) right up to the cloth. I hear from the takes I could have placed it more to the middle go make it brigher, especially since the speakers in this cab are a bit on the bassy side aswell. Amps EQ was all set to noon. Soundinterface was a Line6 POD X3 Live. The input level of the mike almost at full. (Console, noamp, americanclassic preamps were set in the Line6 Gearbox software) - Input selected as "mic". First take with preamp "Console" selected, default settings HT5CONSOLE.mp3 ( 719.98K ) Number of downloads: 152 Second take with "no amp" HT5NOAMP.mp3 ( 719.98K ) Number of downloads: 138 Third take with a preamp called American Classic HT5AMERICANCLASSIC.mp3 ( 719.98K ) Number of downloads: 150 Fourth take with the colsole again, added some reverb effect while recording. I added quite a lot just to notice a differance, doesn't sound all that epic but it works. HT5CONSOLEREVERB.mp3 ( 719.98K ) Number of downloads: 146 Sorry for the mp3's all being same size, I rendered all from within the same project which means they are all of the same length meaning the three shortest ones have some silence in the end. Thanks for putting in the time for me on this one Mickem you have been very helpful, Its going to be interesting to see how it sounds I just bought a Blackstar Head and cab, they should be here tomorrow.another thing Should I definitely buy 2 sm57s??? or just 1 No problem! Ah you did order an Blackstar? It's great fun If you're planning to run the mike through your POD one is enough since the POD only has one mic input. When you're dealing with two mikes you'd have another think to worry about when setting up your gear for recording and that's to make sure the mikes aren't out of phase. Another interesting opportunity if you're getting two could be to get two different mikes, a SM57 is a given, but then someting different.
