I'm on the look out for some Jazz music. I know there is a hell of a lot out there, but if anyone can reccommed artists / albums that can act as an introductory to this genre I'll be most grateful.

Thanks

I like some jazz artists but I'll leave it to maestro to give a proper advice.

Depends a bit on genre. Modern or traditional? Cool, bebop, traditional etc.

Personally I like artists like Miles Davies and Chet Baker. When it comes to guitarplayers (what may be what you ask for here?) I would say Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Pat Methany and John McLaughlin. But many others are out there...

Just to go a little on with the jazz guitarists: I'm also very fond of Django and other gipsy style guys (Stochelo Rosenberg, Bolou Ferré and Birelli Lagrene). For bossanova Louis Bonfa and Charlie Byrd. (Both with Stan Getz). And don't forget Tommy Emmanuel or Barney Kessel.
BTW: a typo in the previous - it's Metheny.

I'm not that big on Jazz, but Bill Evans, Miles Davis and John Coltrane are absolutely amazing.

Also Jan Johansson, don't forget to check him out. He's probably my favourite musician of all time

I was just thinking of modern jazz players, but Benson's early stuff is really jazz. But whatever the "style" he is an awesome musician to listen to.

This thread here is probably worth a look at as well. The Fusion list has some interesting people who could very easily sit in the Jazz list as well smile.gif .

A few others worth mentioning: Crusaders, RMS, Steps Ahead, Mike Brecker, Charlie Mingus, Art Tatum, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Weather Report, Yellow jackets.

I liked early Benson when he was more in to playing Wes Montgomery type licks rather than his later singing. His singing, for me, is ok but a bit too close to 'smooth jazz'.
