This thread here is probably worth a look at as well. The Fusion list has some interesting people who could very easily sit in the Jazz list as well
.A few others worth mentioning: Crusaders, RMS, Steps Ahead, Mike Brecker, Charlie Mingus, Art Tatum, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Weather Report, Yellow jackets. I liked early Benson when he was more in to playing Wes Montgomery type licks rather than his later singing.
