Well that riff is in B minor, or possibly C# phrygian. Both scales would work over that riff. If you can sweep then try sweeping some arpeggios of the chords there. So if you're in F# minor you can use: Bminor arpeggio, C#dim arpeggio, and Dmajor arpeggio. If you're in C#Phrygian then you can use: Bminor arpeggio, C#minor arpeggio, and Dmajor arpeggio.

About speed picking just any licks or runs you know, transpose them into the scales i mentioned above. Also try and develop something melodic first, and use more shreddy licks as a climax for the solo.

Hope this helps. smile.gif If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Kinda looks like B minor would work on it.

If you listen to Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized, that has a very similar riff in it so it might give you some ideas.

it's not really maths, so you have to know how to do it.
listen to what you are playing, and try to hear some nice melody in your head smile.gif
then just figure out how to play it on your guitar...
simple as that!

Maybe you could just fool around in the B minor scale until you come up with something smile.gif

Any newbie can compose something mate. Im newbie too.

What I would do is, look the B minor scale, and let your rythym guitar friend play his riff for a while. At the same time, just improvise, do some "jam" over that riff using the notes of the B minor scale, until you get a cool melody. It will be something you created instead of someone else and it will be really fun to do also.

You can use the GuitarPro to see the scales or incase you dont have it, here it is the Bminor scale:

B minor pentatonic is the simplest approach here but you can extend later if you wish.

Maybe you should ditch tabs? Start playing a little by ear instead.

Hmm, if tuning on the last 3 strings is A E E from high to low and you have 7 string guitar than this is F# minor right? Correct me if I'm wrong guys, I do feel a little dizzy atm unsure.gif
