Yeh, just about, but the concept of modes can be applied to any scale not just the Major scale. So the Major modes are the Major scale with different root notes. The Harmonic minor modes are the Harmonic minor scale with different root notes. The Hirojoshi modes are the Hirojoshi scale with different root notes. I also want to point out the different root notes are all the notes the original scale contains.

There are 7 boxes and 7 modes. In C Major for example.















Those scale shapes were from Zsolt's Modal Madness lesson. Also I want to point out that the Major scale is called the "Ionian" as a mode, and the Minor scale is called the "Aeolian" as a mode.

Yes the Minor scale is the 6th mode of the Major scale. In modal terms though the major is called the Ionian and the minor is called the Aeolian. A minor is the 6th mode of C major.

There they're using the Phrygian shape, which contains all the notes of the Major scale, but not starting on the 1st note of the major scale. If you look closely you'll see the root note is actually the 6th note of that shape, not the first.

If i take the first scale diagram that emir linked, can i make that phrygian or ANNY other mode just by using another root note?

so for example G major = Mixolydian?
