So, I couldn't make a good take with 16th notes. Almost couldn't make a good one with 8th notes either, but here's my two best tries with those.
This key changing is really hard, but awesome practice.

Here's my notes for which modes to use and which keys they belong to:

| A aeolian | D dorian | E mixolydian | A aeolian |
| A aeolian | D dorian | E mixolydian | A aeolian, C# mixolydian |
| F aeolian | E mixolydian | D lydian | A ionian, C# Phrygian |
| F aeolian | E mixolydian | D lydian | E mixolydian |
| A major |

A minor/C major:
A aeolian
D dorian

A major/F minor:
E mixolydian
F aeolian
D lydian
A ionian
C# phrygian

F major/D# minor:
C# mixolydian

correct?

Hi Dexxter and thanks for the video smile.gif I thought this would be a piece of cake for you smile.gif You did some good parts but many had wrong notes. There is just one trick in this whole assignment. Here are some tips how to make it easier for you. When you start playing the first part you are in C major (except E7 chord). From F# minor chord you are in A major. That's all smile.gif Modes will change automaticaly through the progression as you play one scale. Of course I want you to focus on modes and their roots instead of thinking of the major scale but you can do it until you get familiar with the shapes.

You wrote F minor in your list. There is no F minor here, there is F# minor. That's very different smile.gif I guess you meant F# minor. Also there is no "F major/D# minor". I didn't write that in the progression.

You wrote all correct modes but there is an exception where I though you would hear it. It is better to play C#7 as mixolydian, not phrygian. The same goes for E7 chord. That's because phrygian is a minor mode - it's got minor 3rd in the scale. Our dominant 7 chord has major third. Actually the best scale to use there would be phrygian dominant. Same as phrygian but with the major 3rd. That's the 5th mode of harmonic minor. We haven't done these yet but I just thought you would hear it. In our case we need to have some kind of a dominant 7 flow over that chord. The easiest option is just to throw a dominant 7 arpeggio (1, 3, 5, b7) and you would hear that you're sounding great smile.gif

This is not bad take but I would like to hear an improved one with changing more positions. Let fix this for the next Sunday so we can go for more modal stuff.

Yes, I know smile.gif It's the one bar jump to e mixolydian that messes with me. And trying to think of root notes of the modes all over the neck too instead of just the shapes of the major scale is also one of the hard factors for me for now. I'll think less of the root notes for a while smile.gif

Yes, I meant F# minor, sorry smile.gif The F major/D# minor came from C# mixolydian, isn't that correct? Or am I thinking wrong?

I feel stupid, I know all this but got it wrong somehow smile.gif I guess I didn't hear it because I was busy trying to think of which notes I could play or something haha

Ok C# mixolydian can be from F# major not F major but as I said, just play C#7 arpeggio there and it will be fine. The same for E7 chord. You don't have a reason to feel stupid. You're one of the fastest progressing participants.

I suggest that you fix this take within a day or two so we don't lose the whole week. Now that you got the whole point you can just throw a take and upload it. You don't have to write modes, I can hear them.

Don't worry, happens to me sometimes smile.gif Especially for the B chord which we in Bosnia call H chord. Our B is actual Bb smile.gif

We call it H here in Sweden too (or rather did, everyone learns from english books and internet and all so B is more used now I think) but I never learnt any guitar/music related stuff in swedish so laugh.gif to call it B makes more sense to me anyway smile.gif

I'm getting a hold of this now Emir, I'll post a take tomorrow smile.gif Still 8th notes tho

8th notes are ok. The technique and speed is not that important here. I want to see that you know what you're doing on that neck smile.gif

Ok, let's say you passed this one with about 70%. Still some wrong notes here and there but much better than the last time. You're sliding too much on one string when shifting position. Try to visualise roots on other strings so you can move in between shapes while on any string. Also I noticed you're sticking too much on the first couple of frets and using open strings. That's 4th position of A minor or 3rd position of C major. Open strings don't always sound interesting on distorted electric guitar. Maybe a couple of notes. I only use those on acoustic this much. Anyway I am happy too see the progress. You'll get comfortable with this I'm sure.

Let's now catch up with the next assignment which is on Sunday. If you don't manage by Sunday try by Tuesday at least so we can catch Sunday deadlines from there. NoSkill is doing this one so I'll just copy the assignment from his thread.

Assignment 2 - December 13th

The second task is to make charts (like I made for major scales) for arpeggios in 5 positions. Please make 3 charts - maj7, dom7 and min7 arpeggios. I want you to send me the picture on email, do not upload here as some other guys will have to make the same. We don't want stolen work smile.gif You can use Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel or any other graphic program and export jpg picture. You already have my chart so for maj7 arpeggio you can just take out 2nds, 4ths and 6hts, that will leave you with maj7 arpegio. For dom7 the same but change the maj7th interval to b7th and that will give you dom7 arpeggio. You figure out the min7 chart. Paint root notes in black or some different color that the other notes. Play all 3 of them like you did with the major scales in all positions as written on the chart which you will make. Please play all arpeggios over some drum loop or a metronome. You can use one key for each.

Assignment 3 - December 20th
Improvise over the same track that you have made for the first assignment but only with arpeggios that you have made on the second assignment. When I say arpeggio I don't mean the fast sweeped arpeggio. Just normal 8th or 16th notes one after another. Here is the list which you can use. The chords are not in order as on the backing, just the reference which arpeggio you should use over each chord.

Am - min7
Dm7 - min7
E7 - dom7
C#7 - dom7
F#m - min7
E - dom7
D - maj7
A - maj7
E/G# - dom7

Please use as many positions as you can.

Assignment 3

Ok, here it goes... A lot of wrong notes and times when I get completely lost.. But at least you can see where I'm at. This is basically just me practicing this in hopes of getting a good take.

Well I hope this will be fixed smile.gif I need a video arpeggios that you have sent to me as well. Just pure arpeggios in one video and another one with a good take over this progression by the end of the month. So 2 separate videos. Also one REC take is required by the end of the month if we want to move on. Any GMC lesson. You still have time smile.gif When you upload on the REC thread please leave the link here as well.

Cheers

Hi Emir

Here's the REC take to round up December: B minor Ballad Solo

Edit: I'm sorry Emir, but it would be just another video like the last one if I tried recording one. I feel like I need to practice this a lot more, since I didn't nail these progression assignments. And I've been thinking that maybe it would be a good idea if we took a months "break" so I could really learn all the notes and positions so I can nail this. And then maybe we could continue in February, if this is ok with you ofcourse? I feel that I'm just going to, sort of, take up your time if you have to watch me fail, or slightly pass, the assignments over and over. So is this ok with you? And the MTP rules and those who decide them ofcourse?

Thanks for the REC video.

If you want to take a month break then ok but can you just submit the video of arpeggio shapes - not improvisation over the backing. With that one I can close this thread and submit to GMC staff to approve it.

Ok. So I'm just playing the arpeggio positions over a drum loop? Like I did with the major scale positions?

Thanks man that was really good. I hope you will use these shapes a lot. So this thread will be locked now and we'll make one month break as you said.
