Hello my friend, here are your June assignments!
You said you want to start with some funk. I will gladly give you some funk to rehearse. Not only that we will do funk style of playing, but I will try to put lessons that will help with improvising too. I made several funk lessons that are both rhythm and lead, so one rhythm and one lead one (combined with theory in between) will be a good place to start. These two lessons can form a bond and give you an idea what skills to use when improvising, not just funk, but anything. Here are June assignments: Assignment number 1: deadline: June 14 task: check out this lesson, and rehearse videos 2 and 3 goal: post an audio recording of these two videos by the end of the deadline Assignment number 2: deadline: June 20 task: check out this lesson, and rehearse videos 4 and 5 goal: post an audio recording of these two videos by the end of the deadline Assignment number 3: deadline: June 26 task: check out this lesson, and rehearse video 6 goal: post an audio recording of this video by the end of the deadline Assignment number 4: deadline: June 30 task: rehearse the whole lesson, request backing couple of days earlier, and record a video of your playing the lesson in normal tempo goal: post the video for REC program grading and review. Theory assignments for June: Answer all the questions bellow: 1. What major key E dorian mode is? 2. What are the chord triads of that key? 3. If we choose E minor key as our base key for this backing, what is it's relative major key? 4. What chords are mostly used in this lesson? 5. What scales are mostly used in this lesson? 6. What is the most natural scale (mode) that is supposed to be used with E7 chord? Why? This will cover the funk rhythm basics for the month of June. In the next month we will do some bluesy/funky lead stuff that can relate to the chords used here. This will help you develop your improvising skills too. I will focus on arpeggios too, but later on in the program. If t This post has been edited by Ivan Milenkovic: Jun 8 2010, 11:08 PM -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfaKZayhy9U I failed to practice with the wah all week. I'll get it in the next lesson. I just realized I was supposed to record licks 2 & 3 and I did 1 & 2. Sorry. This is very good. You rhythm is well kept, and although some notes are a bit different, it sounds good. One thing I must mention is the way you strum. In funk, try to keep it as tight as possible. Movement with the strumming hand is very fast, and very swift, it goes through all the strings, so you get one sound instead of several strings (if you know what I mean). Keep these strums as short as possible, and always try to play from the wrist, doing down & up all the time, and keeping the hand relaxed and always having some momentum. This gives the weight to the sound.

OK my friend, but rules of MTP say that you must put REC video at the end of the month. I cannot continue the MTP in July if there is no REC video of June. Sorry about this
I will gladly help you with assignments or anything you may need, but not as MTP, simply because of the rules. I hope you understand. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

This is good my friend. I like the sound, but it seems like you are restraining your picking hand. Try to mute all the strings, and strum them all, the sound will be much better.

hey my friend!
I'm happy to inform you that we will continue the MTP in July, you provided the REC take that is very good IMO. Here's what I wrote there: The only thing I would recommend is to try to strum all the strings almost all the time, and try to mute the others, it would produce scratching noise that is essential for the funk sound. I LOVE the way you used wah in this lesson. It came out very cool. I used envelope filter (autowah) in original, but I really dig this too, very nice touch. I give a 9, because of the strumming, everything else is great. Stay tuned for upcoming assignments! -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE
