It's pretty annoying, but then again, how could make a Top 100 list that makes everyone happy? if you base on technique, steve vai etc should be up there. phrasing, maybe john frusicante or something. popularity, and being iconic, jimmy hendrix etc. having an odd knack of making good songs out of few notes, kurt cobain, johnny ramone (sp)? older guitarists Vs new guitarists? it goes on and on. i don't like the list very much myself. but, it's impossible to make a good list that will satisfy EVERYONE. so i cut them some slack. also, i think it's worth noting that people that read rolling stones are primarily music fans, not actual guitarists. so if you asked someone who didn't play guitar (but loved rock etc) to make a list, it wouldn't suprise me to see it like look like that (or something like it). This list clearly does not relate to the musical prowess of these guitar players. Nor does it review them a guitarists but mainly as popular musicians which had a bigger impact. I mean if you look at it from such a perspective such as Kurt Kobain is in the list since he inspired and quase created the whole grunge generation. This already before he died. Actually when Kurt died the whole grunge movement in a way died with him. This is a typical pop magazine list not targeted at anybody who knows anything about music.
