This is one of the main reasons why I always consider teaching funk to my students that want to become well skilled rhythm players and well skilled players in general. In my opinion, a lead guitarist that has a strong grasp on rhythm, is a far better lead player, even if he is not that technical, simply because he will involve the rhythmic knowledge into his phrasing, making things far less predictable.
