Hi Paal! Welcome to your Gab's Army thread!!

Could you please tell me a bit about you, your musical tastes, influences, strengths and weaknesses? I would need some videos or audios of you playing rhythm guitar, so please post your best material here. If you have some music or ideas of your own, also post them here. Also let me know how you think that I can help you and what are your expectations for our job. You can check the other Army's thread to discover the different modalities of this project.

The principles of our Army are:

+ Improve your technique
+ Make music and solos
+ Have fun
+ Destroy the enemy (hahaha not really just kidding... )

Thanks mate smile.gif

About me:
I'm old. Really old. I've seen governments come and go, even overthrown. I've witnessed the course of time take it's toll, on the world, on the climate and on me (which is the worst part). My fingers have grown weary and slowly withers each passing minute. My hair is gone, my hearing have seen better days and my face looks as though I've just crawled out of a grave. Pale, thin, weak and weary. We don't have much time Gabe, I'm old. Really old. I'm 32 smile.gif

Musical taste & influences (in no particular order):
The Beatles, Anthrax, Tori Amos, Alice In Chains, Ingrid Michaelson, Soundgarden, Creedence, Satyricon, Thin Lizzy, Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, ZZ Top, The Allmann Brothers, Arcturus, Vader, Megadeth, Metallica (the good old stuff), Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Oasis, Counting Crows, Old Mans Child, Dave Matthews, Deftones, Staind, Incubus, Feeder, Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant Lee Phillips, John Mayer, Nada Surf, Blitzen Trapper, The Tallest Man On Earth, Iron Maiden, Pogo Pops, Frank Hammersland, Popium, Anathema, Ryan Adams, Testament, Machine Head, Evile, Danzig, The Misfits, Judas Priest, Mustasch, Paradise Lost, Overthrow, In The Woods..., Godsmack, Soen, Tool, The Hellacopters, Hellsingland Underground, Monster Magnet, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, Helmet, Shinedown, The Cult, Pearl Jam, Motorhead, Keep Of Kalessin, Isengard, Immortal, Bathory, Ulver, Entombed, Primordial, Dissection, My Dying Bride, Amorphis, While Heaven Wept, Rancid, Live, Mark Lanegan, Screaming Trees, Porcupine Tree, Threshold, Marillion, amongst others...

Strengths:
I believe I'm a good rhythm player. I can play different styles, and I'm good at writing melodylines and make songs a tad more interesting.
I enjoy playing, which is important.

Weaknesses:
Oh my, where to start... laugh.gif
Solos, I basically can't play if they get a little complicated. Theory, I don't know it. Scales, isn't that a rigid plate which grows out of the skin of various animals? Progressive stuff with time signatures that looks like a math exam. I use way too much time writing a song from beginning to finish, at least most of them. Oh, and I can't sing smile.gif

I don't need to learn advanved soloing, progressive confusion, advanced theory or all the scales in the world.
But, I'd like to learn new chords for Pop, Rock, and Hard Rock, beginner/intermediate short solos, a little theory to go with it, and get better at what I already know. I have no plans of being a solo guitarist, but I have plans to be a damn good rhythm player smile.gif

Next week, when the "Gladmat festival" here in Stavanger is finished, and our guestroom isn't occupied I will record some samples of my playing and post them in this thread so you can hear what I'm up to smile.gif I'll also post some songs from earlier reording sessions, so you can hear what I can play etc.

Yeah, that about covers it for now don't you think? smile.gif

For now, a Ukulele improvisation will have to do:
https://soundcloud.com/audiopaal/ukulelika-demo

My stepdad gave a ukulele a while back. I learned four chords and recorded it with a microphone, improvising a melody part and recorded a contrabass in the background. All in all, pretty good for a few hours days work laugh.gif I haven't touched it since I'm afraid... sad.gif

Hehe, I was only joking. Young and fit as a fiddle smile.gif
Thanks mate, glad you liked it smile.gif

Yes, I can post audio files. I just cannot record new ones until sometime next week.
The latest thing I recorded was last summer (time goes by fast..). I was in a hurry to get it finished before I went on vacation,
so I didn't mix it properly, but it sounds pretty decent I think.
It's a pop song. I'll post it here, so you can have a listen to my playing, and I'll post some more next week smile.gif

Here it is: Attached File  With_You_Instrumental__nestenferdigmix_.mp3 ( 8.12MB ) Number of downloads: 99

Hey mate, this sounds very nice. It's a very tasty composition. I think that your rhythm is very good on this song.

You said you want to learn new chords, progressions and ideas for pop and rock music and you said wrote "Th Beatles" as the first band on your list of favourites... I wonder, how many songs by them have you learnt and analysed?

Thank you smile.gif Glad you liked it Gabe smile.gif
I have some plans for re-recording that song this fall.
I have a few songs in the same style, so I want to record them with the same sound/gear/mix etc.

Yeah, I'm always trying to learn some new stuff to help me broaden my horizon.
Actually none. Which is kind of embarrasing when you own one a huge collection of The Beatles smile.gif
I've always wanted to learn "Here Comes The Sun" and "Rain" though..

Ok! Let's start learning by ear one of these two songs and write here the structure, chord progressions, and why not your version. Which one you prefer to start: "Here comes the song" or "Stormbringer"?

I'd love to make my own version of both biggrin.gif
I'll have a look at them early next week and decide which one to start with.
Do you want a direct cover, or should I make a cover version with my own twists and turns? smile.gif

This sounds great!! It doesn't necessary needs to be a direct cover if you prefer to give it a special production. But be sure that you can also play the whole piece by once, to use this also as a technique training.

Nice smile.gif
I'm not gonna change the keys of the songs, it's just that sometimes I think it's better to play the chord somewhere else on the neck than they originally do, if you know what I mean. So I might make a few very subtle changes if that's ok?
I have to make some happy audiopaal adjustments you know laugh.gif

And I'll practice until I can play it in one go, I usually do that anyway whenever I write a song.

Or maybe you can change the meter. This is a reversion that I did many time ago, and it's one of my favorites (talking about my reversions).

You mean I can "change" it completely, like making a heavier or softer version of it? smile.gif

Think I'll make a funky little pop n' roll song out of it..
Just to make it hard for myself laugh.gif

Started learning the main riffs yesterday.
Just need to "rewrite" some of them to make it a bit more interesting smile.gif

Yes. I have started practicing the main riffs, and rewriting of the rhtyhm (just the rhythm of the right hand picking).
It'll take a while though, not an easy song considering the solos that are part of the rhythm guitar.
I'll try to make them into something funky as well, hehe..

You said I could make it different biggrin.gif
