Do You Record Youtube Videos? Options

One of the great things about Youtube is that you can promote your music and get "audience" from all over the world. When playing live gigs and starting a band, it can be really hard to get even 50-100 people to the club on the night when your band is performing. What is a wonderful thing about Youtube is that it gives everyone an equal chance to getting very cool exposure (=audience). Let's never forget, those people watching videos are real people same as when playing live gigs. If the video gets thousands of views that is like playing big clubs and small festivals. If it gets tens of thousands, its like playing big arena concerts. If the video goes viral and a big number of views (maybe even a million?) - you can bet your music/playing has been heard by more people than big stars get on their best concerts.

Now the question: are you recording Youtube music/guitar videos? If not, why?

I always record videos for Youtube from many reasons:
First of all it's the most simple way to compare my videos and see my progress. Also if I look at my first guitar video it's a little embarrassing but I kept that video public because it's good people to know how I start. It's not a shame to learn things. This is me with good things and bad things You can like my music or you didn't but I will always go on my way no matter what will happen and what people will say

The second reason it's because was a good way to let people to know about me. My participation in guitar contests made to meet people from around the world. Also I meet some promoters who helped me a lot and they support my activity.
Many positive messages and PM from different people from listeners at great musicians made me to force my limits
This thing made me to understand that I must bring everything to a new level. Was the moment when I start to learn video editing and to invest a lot of money for background, professional lights, HD camera etc. It's my respect for what I do and for people which are near me and wait to put a new video

Now about the hard part for me at this moment.
I already have my Youtube channel and I have persons who like my playing and search after all I do and follow me everywhere. But also I receive too many messages with the question "when I will put a new video". Why it's hard this thing?
I made a little pause with posting videos because I take a decision. I work a lot to brings everything (playing, video editing, mixing) at another level. I need a little time to prepare my return in force. When I will be back I want to come with new things such as my songs and another level for contests. This is my strategies because I saw that you can promote alone in this way if you make all the things right and in a smart way. Bring the new things and maybe you can attract attention. Don’t do what millions of people already do. This is how I thought to make my next step If it's good or isn't, I don't know now but I will try any possible chance

As a conclusion, to make videos for Youtube it's the best way to make your own "audience"

I did do, I went through a short period of doing this. Then I got paranoid about the quality of the playing and removed them all in a panic one day :|

I might make some new ones sometime, but I need to improve the consistency of my playing, I have a lot of technique issues I need to fix.

Now that I wrote G... have you thought on simplifying your surname? I find it tricky to write and remember. Is it just me?
It could be a good marketing movement but maybe you wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

Yea, I think that's the right approach. That then makes me feel like a fraud and I get a bit depressed, that's what lead to me pulling all the videos.

I think I will re-post them or make some new ones some time soon.

You are being too hard on yourself. If you went to the trouble to do a lot of takes to make a really good video, you are not a fraud, you are being respectful to your audience by wanting your performance to be good. What's wrong with that?

Time and practice will take care of any consistency problems. Part of that is taking the time to do retakes of your video. That counts as practice, not failure. A good take merely shows what you actually can do. You should be proud! B)

Cheers dude, yea I think I should look at it that way. It's just that, at least to me, it seems like the difference between the best and worst take is massive, I really want to close the gap so that I always perform at least a reasonable rendition.

But yea, you're right, that's only going to happen through doing it more. I will make more videos soon, I just have to find something to do a video of I guess! Maybe I'll go back and re-do videos of the ones I already did, to see how they compare. I still have the old videos on my computer somewhere.

Look at the success of OLA ENGLUND for example. Started off just making youtube videos, then gets invited to tour with international touring bands. Not bad eh? And he's mostly a rythm player so it's not like you have to be Joe Satrianni.

Building an audience for your music is how you transform your music in to a financially viable product as opposed to a free product. It's the audience, after all, that defines the financial worth of any offering we musicians make. Even if we feel our work has inherent monetary value, or even if we paid a lot to record/took time to learn etc., in the end it's the audience that decides if the music is worth paying for, even after they steal it of a forum post somewhere on the web

It's part of the process man! Everything that we watch at facebook or listen in albums has a lot of pre-work and sometimes thousands of out takes! You don't have to feel bad about working hard to record the best video you can at the moment. That's what I do with GMC lessons, sometimes I have to do many takes until I have a good one.

Sure How about our own RYAN BRUCE!!! He started with zilch and now has 20,00 youtube subscribers, several endorsement deals, his own signature line of pickups and stompboxes, and income from the ads placed on his vids is substantial just looking at his view counts. Here is his page.

Also, KEITH MERROW comes to mind Again started with zilch and turned it in to a big following (50,000 subscribers!) and got offered a job working for Seymour Duncan from home! He answers questions in their forum. He also has several endorsement deals and signature distortion with PRO TONE pedals. Also, in a band with Jeff Loomis now and they raised $35,000 on kickstarter to record their album!!!

These are just a few examples. It all comes down to one thing.

*BUILDING AN AUDIENCE!!!!

Youtube is great for that. Until you do build an audience, nothing your doing is likely to take on much life of it's own, nor likely to get much traction. No matter how good it is. So make vids!!! Expand your audience!!

It's a very nice business card to have as an artist in the times we live in - it grows exposure, skills, notoriety and it helps you evolve and keep track of your progress as a musician.
