Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Nightwish Style by Ben Higgins

My first Level 5 attempt (all my RECs are level 3 for now :-) Amazing lesson, as always, and I can see I'm very far away from being perfect. Several comments: my guitar is tuned 1/2 step down, so I have lowered the pitch of the backing track; I completely forgot about the introductory slide out; I don't particularly like some of my palm mutes; I don't think I render the exact timing as the original during the solo; I'm afraid that my bend is a little bit off-pitch. All in all, a lot of things, but I didn't think I can cope with a level 5 anyway, so let's see what you guys think :-)

Hi Val, this is not bad at all. Not as bad as you thought it was smile.gif

Your timing is generally good but in a couple of places you can hear that you're slightly ahead on the main riff, during the E5/F5 chord change. I think that it would help you stay in time if you use down strokes like I do in the lesson. It may seem harder because it uses more stamina but you will get it after a while.

It also helps me to get that palm muting in the run at 0:16. The A string is played with no muting and the open E should be muted. You may find this easier if you adopt downstrokes for the entire rhythm section.

The solo section was very good. We talked already about working on vibrato in your other REC. Your vibrato here is a little fast.. you can slow it down a bit more. This solo only needs a bit of gentle vibrato to keep the notes from sounding too dull. You manage this very well but it was just a little fast and nervous is all.

The bend / tapping was also very good. You thought it was bad but I disagree - good work! cool.gif

Hi mate,

I have to also disagree with you and agree with Ben. Your take is good! Your timing is consistent in most of the parts and everything sounds good. There are off course some details to adjust regarding the use of palm muting, and also vibrato in the solo section but the overall is really good man.

There are off course things to polish, and it's important to do it, but you are very close to master the whole lesson.

Keep on the hard work.

Hey again!

Sam as Ben...I would like to say it's not as bad as you think it is. Actually that'a really nice take! You showed us more than once how well your right hand picking and strumming works. I like how even your tone is through all the strokes. You also take care about the silence between strokes and that's a really professional behavior. I have nothing to add to what has been mentioned by guys above smile.gif
