My real name is Lance and have been playing off and on for 15 years. I have been playing much more consistent for the last year. My favorite bands are Metallica, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold and really liking a couple newer bands called Burnos and Meytal. My main goal is to be able to write songs with a 7 string guitar tunes to B and/or drop A while still playing standard tuned songs as well. I want to be able to make riffs that make sense. I want to be able to solo better. In 5 Years I would like to be able to understand theory and be able to write great songs and play fast solos. On days off I have 1-2 hours I can practice. On work days I have maybe 20 mins. I work 14 hours a day (eeeeeeeeek!!!!) But it pays the bills! I played 3 live shows. 2 of them were back when I first started playing-and then the 3rd show was June 23, 2015. There were over 200 people at that one. My strong points would be I know and understand basic major and minor scales-pentatonic and diatonic. I understand what modes are but only the very basics. I would say I am at an intermediate level. I do have a web camera but have never recorded with it- I can try using my phone maybe? Ill post dropbox links to a few things.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/a8vb48tad5knc96/P6250029.MOV?dl=0
This was a short clip from the show last year- Had a 6 string tunes to drop A for this song

https://www.dropbox.com/s/as3anqdfzpqo5c7/P...20Live.mp4?dl=0
This is a cover played in standard tuning-and its my favorite song we play.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/g3grmlz11eetbp9/B...MASTER.mp3?dl=0
I wrote this last summer on a six string tuned to B. (I nosw use a 7 sting if I jam on it) It was going to be our first song but the singer didnt vibe with it

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6fv18dqs6u2fkfp/S...20High.wav?dl=0
This song was literally just written by the singer and myself-the drums are programmed (by me) and there is no bass yet. It is far from finished and in the early demo phases. Its our first original with lyrics.

I hope those help you see where I am at skill wise.

Hi friend, thanks for your info!

There are some cool audios and videos there. Your band sounds good live, and your compositions are very promising! For this thread you can use your cellphone. If the sound isn't good, maybe you can any software to make it better. Check out this video:

However, if I can hear your guitar clearly and can see both hands is enough for the mentoring.

We can divide this workout in three at this point:

- Technique
- Improvisation
- Composition

The first task for you is to tell me 5 songs that you like, and search at the forum for a few lessons that captured your attention and made you want to play them. Then, I 'll tell you how to continue...

For Whom The Bell Tolls:

Song structure: Long Intro with bass lead, intro with guitar lead (which is the verse), Chorus (no vocals), Verse, chorus, bridge with guitar harmonies, verse, chorus, end riff with lead guitar to fade out.

Intro: F#5, E5: then goes E5, G5, F#5, F5 3x E5, F5, F#5, G5 1x then leads to verse riff without vocals which is E5, G5, E5, G5, C5, A5 then chorus riff e,e,e, G5, e,e,e A5, e,e,e G5, Bflat5, F#5 and 2nd time through ends with Bflat5, F#5, F5.

the bridge is similar to verse- E5, E5; E5, G5; E5, B5

outtro is: E5, G5, E5, G5, A5 and repeats

seems to be in the key of E minor-except for the F chord isnt in that scale.......maybe it uses E phrygian?

One thing unique about this song is it has a long intro and in that it plays both the verse and chorus riffs without words. I really like the one riff played in the intro that is never played again once the lyrics start.

I will work on the other stuff now. Just wanted to get something posted today.

Excellent mate! Everything sounds correct. You are right about the use of E Phrygian there. It can be seen as a modal interchange, which means that you are in one mode (in this case Aeolian) and you borrow chords from a parallel mode (Phrygian). Two parallel modes have the same root but different internal structure. E Aeolian and E Phrygian are parallel modes, as well as E Dorian.

Hi Jay, great!

About the improvisation course, yes, work on week#1 and then #2. You can record yourself improvising using the shapes shared there over the backing tracks provided or over any other backing track in major key that you like. At this point the work is mostly based on getting familiar with the sound of each note by itself and connected with different chords from the backing.

Nice! Congrats on the hardware upgrade! I'm sure you won't regret switching to Mac.

Thanks for the update. It's great to know that you are on track. If sound is clear you can use your cellphone to show me the progress. Looking forward to check your new take.

Hi Jay!

Thanks for the video. The main element to adjust on this one is timing. I notice that the legato is not sounding tight in the first riff which is repeated most of the time. Besides it, you can focus also on timing for chord changes and other parts which are not so dramatic but that need some adjustment.
