A lot of their stuff that Ive heard can be a bit 'nice' or 'happy'..... Im not really down with that sort of thing cool.gif but Ive been listening to the Abbey Road album today since Mertay posted that track, I liked more than I thought I would! especially 'come together' what an awesome song.... have you guys heard it? rolleyes.gif
Id also add 'dear Prudence' to my list of great Beatles tracks, even if I did think it was a Siouxsie And The Banshees song.

The best beatles cover though, has to be this one for me smile.gif

had not actually heard that version, it really sounds like a good aerosmithy song! totally suits them.
There's a few tracks on Abbey Road that, to me at least, sound proper 70's.... those were that ones I liked the most! maybe that was the sound at the end of the 60's, I dunno but there's a 70's stonerish vibe going on there which I didnt expect to hear smile.gif

So you like "She's So Heavy", "Dear Prudence", "Come Together", "Revolution", "Lucy in the Sky"....guess what they all have in common? They were all written by John Lennon. And the odds are that any "nice or happy" Beatles song you don't like was written by Paul McCartney. The rest of the group used to call McCartney's songs "granny songs". With a few exceptions, the interesting Beatles songs were all written by Lennon.

Not so fast. Paul wrote a lot of 'not so pretty' Beatles songs. He penned many of their rockers:
Helter Skelter, Back in the USSR, the 16 minute medley that closes Abbey Road (The End, Carry that Weight - and which also effectively closed the Beatles). He's also responsible for Drive My Car, Paperback Writer, Fixing a Hole, Sgt. Pepper, Why Don't we do it in the Road, She came in through the bathroom window, Maxwells Silver Hammer (about murder), Get Back and a bunch of others that though they would fall into the 'pretty' category are absolutely stellar pieces of music i.e., Eleanor Rigby (pretty, yes but it's about a lonely death), Let it Be, Hey Jude, Penny Lane, Yesterday, Long and Winding Road, etc.
And lest we not forget Live and Let Die - though that's Wings.

Only John referred to some of Paul's later tunes (When I'm 64 and such) as granny music. And only during the breakup. None of the others did.

Conversely John wrote a lot of pretty songs such as Do You Want To Know a Secret, Please Please Me, It's Only Love, Girl and Norwegian Wood. Here's a breakdown ... http://www.myrsten.nu/worldnet/beatlesongs.htm

Anyway, as you can see, I get way more riled up about The Beatles than I do about our current administration wink.gif

Don't get me wrong, I was just commenting on a pattern I noticed in all the songs bleez says he likes smile.gif. John may have been more adventurous, but Paul obviously had a greater command of melody. I'm not taking sides in the John vs. Paul debate, but I shouldn't have used the word "interesting". I meant to say the less conventional Lennon/McCartney songs were generally written by John.

LOL! 'Granny songs' biggrin.gif that's a great expression, very apt for the songs Im thinking about and tbf they do have quite a lot of those huh.gif
I do seem to like Lennons vocals more, I kinda wish he had sung Helter Skelter cool.gif
'let it be' is the best PM song Ive heard so far, even though Im not into the religious aspect, Its a great song and I like his vocal in that one.
Ive listened to more Beatles songs in the last 24 hours than Ive heard in my entire life rolleyes.gif

aw man.. first I bought a telecaster, now Im digging the Beatles huh.gif
I still listen to death metal and stoner rock..... Just felt like that needed to be said tongue.gif

The more I get into The Beatles, the more I get why they are so big. They one of the few bands that created extremely popular songs with complex musical elements.

I love lots of their songs. My favorites are in their albums Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper and the White Album, but I'm missing many great ones.

I always recommend to students to dedicate some time to analyze their songs since it's like a composing masterclass. You won't regret it.

Here you'll find a CRAZY man called Alan W. Pollack who has done a deep and priceless analysis of EACH of their songs:

George Harrison has some great vocals / songs on Abbey road as well. Not so much the ringo starr ones though

After you've digested Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road and the 'White' Album then move on to Revolver and Rubber Soul.
