Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Very cool and awesome to see a REC from you mate 👊

I really liked the fact that you included the jam as well!

You do a very good job with the lesson, replicating Alejandro's relaxed technique and soft tone.

The single note slides were lacking a bit of sustain, and also you could probably sustain the chords voicings a little longer to replicate the lesson more precisely.

But overall a killer job with this lesson, you get an 8 from me!

General comments about the jam -

Your distorted tone in the jam is very tasty.

It contains several musical ideas flowing into each other with a build up in dynamics - great!

Occasionally the jam would have benefitted from a little more silence, as this would probably also have given you time to get even more melodic and less scalar (or 'arpeggiated' for that matter 😅 ). This is something everybody struggles with when jamming though - the big challenge is always to make it sound less like a jam and more like a written, melodic solo (but with the 'free' vibes of a jam).

Can't wait to see more stuff from you!

Well done!! I thought your performance for the rec and jam were both quite good. Your displaying very solid technique as well as a good visceral understanding of musicality as evidenced by your jam session. Actually playing music, solos or songs, is after all, the entire point of all of this. It's always great to see when a student jumps in the deep end of the pool and starts swimming. Your solo is creative and has a great feel to it. Also the tone is quite spiff. It takes quite a bit to make a solo work imho. It's not just about using good technique, it's also about finding the right tone and then finding the right notes and playing them in key, in time, etc. All of which you have sorted.

Also, nice home studio! I used to have that same presonus board and those same alesis monitors and an imac as well. All of which was great kit.

Super solid work and an 8 from me!!

Todd

Hi Jim!

Unfortunately I must be fair to all students and I can't grade your take because you don't respect the original lesson made by Alejandro. You don't use the same shapes for chords, you added slides, descending part and a lot of other details. We need to respect the REC rules.

Anyway, I will give you some advice about the lesson and your jamming.

Your tone it's beautiful but on this lesson you should avoid to use too much delay/reverb because your tone has a too long tail which become annoying at some point. All things should sound clear and very well separated as are in Alejandro's lesson.

Now about your jamming, I can say that I found a lot of good melodic ideas and I also like your tone and those pinch harmonics. Are few things that worth to be improved because it's obvious that you have the right skills to do this.

- try to not pick so many notes because it destroy the dynamics and give a square feeling.
- 2:46 - it's better to avoid to play this note so many times in the same way. It sound linear and break the whole good feeling.
- add soft played notes. I really miss this thing in your take
- it would be cool if you will work on how to raise the tension because this is what let you tell a good story.
- try to not repeat the same ideas

I really enjoyed your improvisation and I hardly wait to see a new take from you. smile.gif

Hi Jim!

Great to see that you also added a jam applying the concepts learned in this lesson.

This lesson is not based on technique, it's a lesson specifically designed to learn the fretboard and connect both the major pentatonic with the major triads. This is a very powerful approach that will allow you to follow the chords, and chose the interval that you wish at any time. That's why I suggested working on this lesson in the mentoring thread.

Your performance is good. It could be more relaxed, but you'll be able to record more relaxed takes in the near future. The REC syndrome thing disappears with practice. The more you record yourself, the more natural it will feel.

Your Jam sounds good. We still need to get into this but here are some things/tips to have in mind:

- Try to create shorter phrases.
- Use repetitions and create more motifs (as it happens at 03:35, great phrase there!)
- More use of silences (As Kris suggested)
- Less distortion will provide more dynamics.
- Play more "horizontally". Experiment creating melodies on 1 or 2 strings connecting scale shapes, and why note connecting the triads.

Ok mate, that's all by now. Keep up the good work!

Just a follow up here -

Monica is of course right, as usual we need you to play the notes as they are transcribed in the lesson to qualify for a final grade which ads to your rank/title. Sorry for being misleading in my initial reply!

This is still great playing though, and the grades we have given you in this thread are indicative of what you could expect when covering the lesson note for note!

Keep at it!

I am closing this thread now.
