If you do not know what this is about -
This idea originates from us brainstorming about a possible new collaboration format/idea.
Check out Cael's student team as well.

--------------

@Gab & @Ken

I am super stoked to get started with this - I think Cael's idea will be a killer springboard for us to get creative with! To recap, here is what we have so far:

Cael's original draft idea

Lyrics

Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

As the valley howls its weeping song
The sun sets sail to foreign shores
But this is where I belong
This is my home

In the valleys you better sleep with eyes unshut
or the wilds will run you out of luck
But this is where I belong
This is my home

Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

---------
How do you guys suggest we start this off? Maybe Ken wants to lay down some guitar tracks to a click track?
--------
edit:

>>>> END RESULT <<<<<<

You will also find both track on the GMC Radio.

Extra special thanks to Cael for his amazing musical skills and also for helping me out with a video edit for the track!

Spoken:
Here's to my brothers,
who stood by me as I fell
Like so many times before
When I've felt fragile and sore
I hail to thee!

As the valley holds its weeping song
The sun sets sail to foreign shores
And here is where I used to roam
‘This is what I call my home

In the valleys you better sleep with eyes unshut
or the wilds will run you out of luck

This is where I belong
And this is my home

Chorus:
Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

As the valley holds its weeping song
you better sleep with eyes unshut
or the wilds they will run you out of luck
Though this is where I do belong
And this is what I call my home

I used to call my home
Used to be so strong

Chorus:
Through the valleys 'neath the wasteland wind
I roam these barren lands alone
This is where I belong
This is my home

As the rock would roll, so did the soil, so did my soul
As with Rock n Roll, we had a ball, we filled the halls
Nowhere do we go from here 'cause no man leaves the land!

03:33 Whammy solo by Kris

No man leaves the land!

04:02 Epic nylon solo by Ken

I'm on my way, home again.
I'm coming back again...
mama!!

I'm coming home again

-------

I am extremely proud of the end product, it's just more organic than anything I have been involved with before - and it's oozing chemistry between the participants and the original song structure by Cael!

I think we should play to Ben's (Cael) basic track of drums, bass and the keyboard pad.

Ok guys! I think that Ben did a killer job with this. I already started working on a first mix so we can start building from there. Check your inbox!

Here is a first outline of the backing which Gab sent me (uploading it here so others can follow the process).

I have started working with Cael's melody and lyrics. I haven't yet decided whether to try do my own thing over it, or follow his ideas more closely (or both!)

The backing is a bit neutral in this moment, so I am hoping Ken will throw some cowboy stuff at it 🤠 so we can start blending our colors!

Awesome Todd, looking forward to hearing your takes!

I exported a quick work-in-progress so you can hear what I kind of vocals I am currently working on.

Ken send me some cool guitars and this is how I mixed and proccesed them.

There are two lead guitars. One of them is a Nylon guitar which is panned and the other one has a tremolo effect that Ken used. (Soundtoys plugin). I added some EQ, and Reverb (Valhala Vintage Verb).

In the following parts, I tool his guitar and processed it with a weird filter that make it move (it's some kind of irregular phaser, flanger), and added and auto pan to start making the mix more open.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks Gab!

Could you send me what you have done so far as midi? I have some ideas I would like to try.

As for the structure, the vocals I recorded above are dense. It's pretty much non stop singing during 4 bars. So after that, it could be cool with some kind of guitar response, and then I could throw in some vocal response as well. So we'd be trading short lines during 4 bars. Just an idea.

Btw you guys don't happen to have a talkbox? 🤠

I think that it sounds good! I can add some guitar lines as well!

This is the midi file which also includes some Cael's stuff that was muted in the last mix: Attached File  The_Dual_Collab_Midi.mid ( 21.08K ) Number of downloads: 228

Excellent guys! I have started mixing. This style is pretty new to me I will need to approach it with fresh ears.

Do you want me to do a steel string arpeggio part?
Or do you or Gab want to try one?

Feel free to try it, I think you have got what it takes to match the style! 😎

Also, that bass will do wonders for the mix I think - I am holding off a little on working the drums until we know how the bass will sound.

Ok guys! This is a new version with Ken's bass and steel guitar. I also added a guitar melody with a weird process starting at 00:53, let me know if you like it! And I also tried adding distorted guitar at 1:23 for the lead melody sections. If it works I could do similar things in the following parts... or maybe we can let this part cleaner and save the distortion for the end.

Both the slide guitar 'lead' and the distorted chords work great Gab.
The big chords could come back in every time the melody returns or maybe just the last time - ?

I had to give this a few days to let the mix sink in, it's still work in progress but let me know if you think this is going in the right direction.

Once I feel comfortable with the sound I'll be able to focus more on the vocals.

It sounds great Kris! I love how dynamic the drums sound now!

Here you can download my distorted rhythm & lead guitars, and synth pad in case you want to add them there.
