Hey Im not very educated in the theory myself but i can tell you this,it's not something you can just pick up in a day.I recommend going to Andrew's theory lessons and starting on page one.If you really want to understand it you wil have to put lots of work into it.As for how to use them in your own music,it basically gives you extra knowledge to know what your going to play before you play it.Like if you understand scales and theory you can listen to a song and n your head know exactly what key and scale you will want to play before you ever even pickup the guitar.So basically my idea of theory is like a mechanic going to work with all the right tools,being prepaired .
