Is there any particular reason why classical/spanish guitarists tend to play with the guitar on the left leg than the right.

It's just I'm am interested in heading into classical/spanish but find practicing the style is more comfortable playing in the regular on the right leg fashion.

On the left leg I feel the neck is too far away as I have to stretch further and makes it more difficult to fret notes.

The main reason is that you can stabilize the guitar better in that way.
With the guitar on the left leg, your chest, your right arm and the left leg get your guitar in position, right in the center of your body. You can reach high position easier that way, too.

You can play low position easier with your guitar on your right leg, but as you play advanced pieces, your left hand is required to travel all over the finger board.

Here is my guitar on my left leg, and my left hand moving across the fingerboard.

When I first started, I kept it on the right leg but it was very uncomfortable to me..especially on the high frets. I don't know what the issue was...my positioning of the guitar, the guitar's size, or my size, but it just didn't work.

I play my electric resting on my left leg now. It's very comfortable to me. Also, it's closer to where it hangs when I'm standing.

Playing on left leg gives you good and stable position of the guitar without holding it with one of the hands and when you play standing - position of the guitar is almost the same as sitting with guitar on left leg.

That's the only way i keep my guitar while practicing. I do record some lessons with guitar on right leg but that's usually when the lesson is on riffing and doesn't require a lot of technical stuff.

I can definatly see why many choose to keep it on the left leg there are alot of benifits. For me, I prefer to sit like Muris , Gabriel etc as it just feels natural and my playing is alot cleaner that way.

yeah i do that as well. But i sometimes practice with it the guitar on the left leg, because i need to learn to play standing up correctly.

That's why I play on my left leg. Not only is it more comfortable for me, but the positioning of the guitar is almost the same as when standing. It just seemed to make sense to try to keep the position similar instead of having to adjust to different positions when standing or sitting.

+1 to that.

For me, it has definitely paid off to adjust my guitar so that the position is the same for sitting and standing. I actually find it a bit uncomfortable if I don't have a good neck angle now, although I played with the neck almost horizontal for a long time before.
