As guitar enthusiasts, perhaps we could endulge in trying to introduce the idea of practicing for real to friends and family who already play these types of games?

Of course we cant and wouldnt want to try and force someone to give up guitar hero or whatever, but we could definatly give some gentle persuasion ? wink.gif Maybe even introduce them to GMC!!

Well that's a dumb argument Gen. Why play games like Hitman when you can just go out and do it in real life? Why play drag racing games when you can do it in real life? People play music based games because they're fun, plain and simple. Believe it or not some people don't want to make the commitment of actually taking years to learn an instrument. Be a little more open minded eh?

Drag racing is something that is very expensive, difficult to achieve and dangerous, but anyone have access to musical instruments wich can be bought at real low prices. It sure is hard to become the best with a musical instrument, but that doesnt matter at all, noone is best and noone cares about who is the best in music. You learn so much more with a real instrument than with a stupid game.
But of course, if people wanna play it, thats ok, but I think its really pointless when you can experience and achieve so much more on a real instrument instead.

+1 smile.gif

I have nothing against the game, because it does make some kids start real guitar, i know someone on this site started that way. But for the rest who just play it for hours with no thought of ever playing a real guitar that is fine, just says a bit about them.

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif pretty fun, that made my day laugh.gif
you cannot comparate music with killing( wich is the main goal in hitman), its just ridiculous...and for the racing games, well..i doubt that everyone could do it in real life...music is just much more accessible.
I believe that some people dont want to take years to learn an instrument, but what i wanted to say its just that instead of wasting all those hours on fake instruments, they could have reached a huge level on real ones....im not telling anyone what to do, as long as they have fun, its cool....as i said, it is just MY opinion.

Your off-base about my point. I'm just using Hitman as an example, but people try and make this argument all the time. When you say playing rock band or guitar hero is stupid because you can just play real ones, you have to argue that with every videogame. Guitar hero type games get bad raps, do you ever hear anyone say "Stop playing Madden, just go and play real football"! True it is the real thing but it is a different experience all together. But like you said, if it makes the person just as happy playing Guitar hero than real guitar, what's the problem?

laugh.gif there s not ANY problem, i just said what i thought about it, i never told people to do what i say, i said that they could have been really good at guitar if they have spent all these hours on it, it was only my opinion, nothing more...i said what i thought about these kind of games , period. If they enjoy, thats good for them..i think you re getting mad for nothing tongue.gif well, enough said, everyone should enjoy doing what they like to do, thats all.

Personally, I like games like Guitar Hero because you don't need much practice to enjoy it with friends, compared to a normal guitar.

For instance, you and your friend are playing Guitar Hero together, and you're having a ton of fun because you're around the same skill level, even though he's been playing a while longer than you.

Now think about this. Say you and your friend are jamming, and you've been playing guitar for 2 weeks, and he's been playing for a year. Are you really going to have that much fun?

You are right, i agree with you on that point.
If the goal is to enjoy playing the game with friends, i dont see the problem, as long as they have fun.
I may have explained myself wrong, i dont know...i wasnt pointing anyone with a shotgun saying "You will stop playing that game or i ll shoot you!" laugh.gif and i am sorry if i sounded like that or if i offended anyone, it wasnt on purpose.
What i meant is:
Let's say someone starts to play guitar hero, the guy starts to practice a little bit and then, plays tons of songs and spends tons of hours with some friends(and alone), just enjoying it.
After two months, he reaches an incredible level of playing, he starts to posts covers of songs he played on youtube(like i ve seen many times tongue.gif ) and gets awesome comments on his awesome playing, he ll keep spending many hours per day on the game because he thinks he s good..(and also because actually, video games are pretty addictive, i know what im talkin about, i can easily name all the characters you have on your desktop laugh.gif laugh.gif ).
What do you think if he would have buy a real guitar ( just a cheap one ) and spent all those hours on it? he probably would have had a lot of fun too, okay, maybe not as much as guitar hero, since you need more that 5 days to get good laugh.gif tongue.gif , but he would have learned something that might be useful for him later, both fun and learning in the same time, isnt that great? biggrin.gif ( LOL, i sound like a teacher laugh.gif )
I actually took the example of the guy im talkin bout on a friend of mine, who is addicted to that game( i wont post any links to his Guitar hero vids laugh.gif he may be the guest who's watching the thread laugh.gif ohmy.gif unsure.gif biggrin.gif he would kill me).
Now he wants to start real guitar, the good point is that the game made him want to start playing guitar,
he always says me "Grr, what if i would have spend all that time and money on a real guitar..?".. BUT... he probably wouldnt have the will to start real guitar without the game.
I guess i have to say it has some good points then.
The number of people who start to play because of the game isnt that great though..Gilbert didnt need guitar hero to start real guitar tongue.gif laugh.gif anyways,
My main thought was just that people spend too much time on it, and in my opinion, they could learn to play real music instead of it. It is just what I think about it. Everyone thinks different smile.gif

Edit : Typo

Guitar hero scares me. Almost 100% of people i know who play it don't play real guitar. My best friend actually PRACTICES guitar hero. I call him up last night and ask if he wants to go grab a coffee and he tells me hes working on learning to two hand tap on guitar hero biggrin.gif:D:D:D. I was thinking. U know.. if u learned that on real guitar you could apply it to thousands of songs. Instead he'll only be able to use it on 5 or 6. I do like the idea to Rock Band because it has the capabilities of bringing people to the realisation that being in a band is fun and being able to play songs with a group is fun. I know i have no better feeling than calling up a bunch of guys and saying lets learn this song and then hearing US play it. So then if u get a group of guys together and make 1 kid be the drummer and he actually descides to take up drumming then us musicians win biggrin.gif. The only problem i have again with these games is the kids who seem to think the game takes more talant than real guitar... and kids who think that the songs on the game are the hardest songs on real guitar.. Par example. My friend is convinced that through fire and flames ( Dragon Force) would be harder to play than all of In Presence of Enemies Part1 biggrin.gif or Fire and the Fury by Gus G. HAHA theres my 2 cents on Guitar Hero and Garage Band.

Agreed, while Guitar Hero may be fun right now, and playing with friends and having a lot more fun might be easier to achieve, in the long run you're much better off playing real guitar.

We also forget that Guitar Hero is a video game, and like all video games, it should be taken in moderation.

Also, while it may be tons of fun, there's no variety in it. With real guitar, that's completely different. Everyone has his own style, in Guitar Hero, you can only play what they give you.

As for people who play games over going out and having a social life, that's an addiction, I realized that after WoWarcraft almost had me lose all my friends.
