Well I havent looked too much at the most recent album. But I was quite a big fan of City of Evil and have therefore looked pretty much at that stuff.
I believe that most of his "haunting" sound comes from the use of the flatted fifth and augmented 7th. Now as you said your not big on theory that would basically be a scale that looked like this.
2-1-2-1-1-1-2-1-1
Within this scale he also often uses diminished arpeggios which look something like:
3-3
An example of this would be the Db diminshed arpeggio:
Db - E - G
This might be used if the scale was in D minor as these notes would be the augmented 7th, the 2nd and the 4th. Although there are many diminished arpeggios you can make using the scale above.
