  • Welcome to my new lesson!

The title probably gives away the fact that we are looking at the legendary Steve Vai.
It was the most amusing Vai pun I could come up with!

The things that I wanted to get across in this lesson is Vai's liberal use of the Lydian mode to establish a dreamy, positive soundscape and his use of slides which are an integral part of his unique phrasing.

Not only will we be using the Lydian mode in it's recognisable form but we will also see how using pentatonic shapes from a neighbouring minor key a semitone below can give a different flavour to this mode.

Technically the lesson isn't too demanding. The hardest thing will be fitting in all the slides and position changes in a short space of time. Your fingers will have a lot of work to do. Memorising the phrases will be the first task so I recommend you to focus on 4 bars at a time.

    This lesson will work on:

    -Sliding
    -Vibrato with the index finger
    -Timing
    -Legato
-knowledge and use of Lydian and Mixolydian modes

So, if you still want to discover those mysterious Alien Love Secrets, then this lesson is for you! Enjoy!
