Yes, Metallica is not back. If your thinking this would be that good ol' thrash days, then this would be yet another disappointment. It is however a decent Heavy Metal release, and no one can take that away from them. I had the pleasure to hear the album to its full potential a week before its release, and even I was kind of shocked by it. I've listened to it 6 times since I had it, twice in the same day. Its not bad, nor terrible... just mediocre. An utter mediocrity for once the greatest metal band.
Sound
The sound was decent. I didn't mind any of it at all. The bass was present, drums was decent, the guitars are there, and the vocals were there. None of it was bad, it was just the same old same old. I'm not the one to complain about same old same old, since I love thrash that sounds straightforward, but this release was the bad kind of straightforward. The riffs gets recycled quite frequently. Now this wouldn't be too bad if the song are 3-4 minutes, but it spans on that prog length Metallica tries to over achieve. The very cliche Metallica interlude of acoustic in the middle of the song is bad, always been bad. Oh yeah the "thrashing" riffs seems like it was done by a beginner guitarist... really pathetic.
Vocals
The vocals were done in a new Metallica kind of way. If you don't know what I mean, listen to St. Anger because its pretty much the same thing.
Overall
Overall, the only thing I can say about this album is how decent, but mediocre it is. They are in the RIGHT track this time, but the music and there job requirements are fading fast. If you want thrash, put on Heathen. If you want Heavy Metal, put on some King Diamond. If you do want to hear Metallica trying to relive there moment in the spotlight, and actually trying this time, then put this on.
