Opeth - Deliverance Review
Artist: Opeth Album: Deliverance Genre: Progressive/ Death Tracklist: 1. Wreath 2. Deliverance 3. A Fair Judgement 4. For Absent Friends 5. Master's Apprentice 6. By The Pain I See In Others
Sound: 10 Well, what can i say? Its Opeth, so you know each and every song is going to have that incredible tone only Opeth can achieve. This album is an onslaught of brutal riffage and more than fantastic soloing,
Guitars: 10 Truly amazing, Mikael Akerfeldt and Peter Lindgren are truly a great guitar duo, There riffs are truly unique, nothing sounds like them. From the classic headbangin' riff of "Master's Apprentice" to the more straight forward in your face riffs of "By The Pain I See In Others", this album will grab hold of you and never let go. the solo's Akerfeldt put out on this album are i belive the best hes done, the traditional Akerfeldt style, a mixture of Progressive, Metal, and Bluesy solos create a beautiful sound comparable to no one. I have to mention one certain solo, the first solo in "A Fair Judgement" is without a doubt, for me atleast, Mikael's best solo. And the solos after that are just incredible, the album is full of completely Original guitar work, nothing that will dissapoint.
Bass: 10 Martin Mendez to me stands out as a truly amaizng bass player, His style compliments Mikael and Peter perfectly, from slow Bass melodies to super fast Death Metal Style riffs, Martin pulls out all the stops, "Masters Apprentice" and "Wreath" to me have great bass playing, they just have a groove thats unforgettable.
Drums: 10 Just incredible, Martin Lopez's drum work is among my favorites, from the classic song "Deliverance" which gives us an assault of furious Double bass to the classic grooves in "Master's Apprentice" and "A Fair Judgement", his drum work makes Opeth that much heavier. just simply friggin' good drummin' !!!
Vocals: 10 Well, if i could rate this as high as the mass of our sun times a million, i would, unfortunately i dont know that number, so i give it a 10. Mikael on top of being a Phenomenal guitarist is an absolutely Beautiful singer. His demonic growls which run rampant across this record are simply the best ive ever heard on any Metal album. On top of the incredible growls, Amazing riffs and solos, Mikale has one last talent, his Clean vocals...Which are just magnificent. He can soothe any pain for me when he sings like this, its soft yet very powerful, every word he sings is that much closer to a euphoria. He is truly an incredible musician.
Lyrics: 10 Very well done, they are also as unique as the musicians in Opeth, from the angry growled lyrics at the start of "Master Apprentice" to the more sentimental ones of "A Fair Judgement", there are fantastic. here are my favorites off this album.
From "Master's Apprentice"
There is a peace I am searching There is a freedom I'm depending on There is a pain that's never ending There is a rain falling only on me There is a dream I am living There is a life I am dreaming of There is a death I'm awaiting There is a home I am deserting
From "A Fair Judgement"
It was meant for me Soul sacrifice Forgot the advice Lost track of time In a flurry of smoke Waiting anxiety For a fair judgement deserved
From "Wreath"
A smoke is rising nearby Dust covering my coat Blend together to spell my name Pale, covered me with sweat There are no words left Sole provider of death Distorted faith in myself Human harvest burning Blackest pages turning
Overall Impression: 10 Every single aspect of this album is just awesome. Every Musician does the most incredible job anyone could ever do. Heavy Riffage, Beautiful interludes, incredible solo's, and the astoundingly beautiful 2 minute instrumental "For Absent Friends", this is album is well worth it. This is a true classic only Opeth can Deliver.
