Welcome to the GMC Wiki!
This article is an attempt to give some guidelines for articles - how to approach writing them and what is/is not good practice. It will evolve over time as we learn more about the best ways of using the Wiki. Please feel free to add comments and suggestions, and I will add them into the guidelines.
The link to the wiki is: http://guitarmasterclass.net/wiki
Getting Started
GuitarWiki is under construction and we need your help! Our number of articles grows each day, and we are eager to fill the blank spaces and expand GuitarWiki to become a resource for all users at GMC.
So, please let us know what you know - and start writing! You already have an account with your GMC Forum login. Below you will find instructions of how to use GuitarWiki: how to search, and most important, how to write new content!
Browsing GuitarWiki
The basic idea with a Wiki is that all articles are linked to eachother. Throughout all the text you will see links to other relevant articles.
How to navigate
The most common way to navigate at GuitarWiki is to click your way forward via links to new interesting articles. The top menu (above the logo) is always visible and shows the standard options. If you are interested in a specific topic, there are portals covering the main areas. You reach the portals from the main page. On the bottom of each page you will find Personal Tools, Navigation, and Toolbox menues.
How to search
GuitarWiki has a search feature (left corner above the logo) where you can search for articles explaining specific words or phrases. The search feature is also a good tool to find out if there already exist an article on a topic you wish to cover.
How to write an article
Do you have an idea of a topic you wish to cover in an article, or a word you wish to explain?
Start by searching GuitarWiki to see if it already exists.
You do that with the search feature in the top menu (left corner above the logo).
- Type the word or phrase in the search space and press Go. If there is no article covering your word or phrase, your search result will let you know that there is no such page. You can then click on the "Create this page" option that will be displayed.
How to edit GuitarWiki
All articles in GuitarWiki are possible for everyone to edit. To edit one section of an article, click [edit] on the right side of the text. To edit the whole article, click edit in the top menu. Please preview you changes before you save!
To edit the text you can use the toolbar above the editable area, or the following short list:
Guitar = Guitar
Guitar = Guitar
Guitar = Guitar (internal link)
[http://www.guitarmasterclass.net ] = [1] (external link with no name)
GMC = GMC (external link with a name)
How to insert a picture
To insert a picture or photo to your article, you need to start by uploading it from your computer to GuitarWiki.
- Go to Upload file in the toolbox menu (bottom of each page).
- Upload a picture from your computer according to the instructions at that page.
- Copy 'Destination filename' before you upload the picture.
Return to your article.
- Click the embedded picture icon in the toolbar, or type . Example.jpg = Destination filename.
Edit your picture
- To place the picture to the right type:
- To place the picture to the left type:
- To edit size elaborate with pixels(px) like this:
- To embed a picture and make it "float" to the right of the text:

This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.
- To embed the picture and also give it size and a title:

This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.This is text and the pic should be floating on the right.
Adding a Category to your articles
With this code you can add the category to the lesson, that makes it apear under the list of articles of each category, in this case it's guitarists, with this code:

If it was a gear article you can just write "Gear" instead of guitarists, etc. You can see the full list of different categories that exist in our wiki clicking on the Categories link at the top right of the wiki main page.
Embedding a Video on the Wiki
For a youtube video, use this syntax:
More details here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:EmbedVideo (we are using this extension).
You can also embed video from the following sites:
- Dailymotion
- FunnyOrDie
- Google Video
- sevenload
- Revver
Adding Tabs to your entry
To make tabs look good you need to change to courier font, this way:
<font face="Courier, Courier New" size="3">
E||----------------------|----------------------||<br>
B||----------------------|------------0----1----||<br>
G||----------------------|--0----2--------------||<br>
D||-------0----2----3----|----------------------||<br>
A||--3-------------------|----------------------||<br>
E||----------------------|----------------------||<br>
</font>
And although the code up there might look weird, the entry will look like this:
E||----------------------|----------------------||
B||----------------------|------------0----1----||
G||----------------------|--0----2--------------||
D||-------0----2----3----|----------------------||
A||--3-------------------|----------------------||
E||----------------------|----------------------||
If you didn't change the font, it would look like this!:
E||----------------------|----------------------||
B||----------------------|------------0----1----||
G||----------------------|--0----2--------------||
D||-------0----2----3----|----------------------||
A||--3-------------------|----------------------||
E||----------------------|----------------------||
Using templates to create your articles
When writing articles in GuitarWiki, we would really appreciate if you used one of the templates found on this page. There are templates for different types of articles, portals (only used by moderators), and other pages.
To use a template, include the following text at the top of your empty page, then save the page.

When you re-edit the page, all the content from the template will have been copied over to your page for you.
For example, to use the General Article Template you would use:

Now you can start writing. You can change the headlines and smaller titles, and replace the text in Latin (nonsense text) with your text. To see how your article will look, press 'Show preview'. When you are done 'Save Page'.
Templates
General Article Template - This template should be used for most articles. It's a standard template that can be modified as needed.
Short Article Template - This is a very simple template for shorter articles.
Gear Review Template - Use this for gear reviews.
Album Review Template - Use this for album reviews.
Portal Template - This template is for the portals. It is only used by GuitarWiki Admins.
