Cool! I went to a concert, the rosenberg family united (or something like that) and Django Reinhardt's son was playing along, falco reinhardt. It's so cool to have a dutch guy on number two! I just feel like Lukather is a bit to low.. but that just my humble opinion biggrin.gif

I think its also more about who wrote more memorable songs.
Just because you write complex songs does not mean they are amazing.....AC/DC have some of the most amazing songs...based on simple stuctures..

As far as randy Rhoads was concerned or even James Hetfield they are good at wht they did especially randy i mean at the time he was quite amazing and the solo's he has written for MR crowley, crazy train etc are some of the best....

People will get more and more technical as time progress'es just when u think of this guy is S***, some other guy will come with even more complex work, but only a few have sustained (no pun intended tongue.gif) long enough.

And just like organisedconfusion said, heck even i would take ac/dc songs then dream theatre anyday....

Then again opinions differ...

This isn't about who wrote the most amazing songs though, the title is "Top 50 Guitarists," not "Top 50 Songwriters," and you don't have to be good to be influential, plenty of examples, The Ramones, Nirvana, were all just decent at their respective instruments but influenced a lot of people, (I can't stand them though).

And as far as Randy Rhoads goes, yes he wrote some great solos, but then again, that is how good of a musician he is, not guitarist, and I don't think he was well rounded enough or technically skilled enough to be put near the top, but neither should most in the top 20. And yes technical skill is a gigantic part of music, maximum technical skill allows you to express yourself in ANY way through music. Had to say that before someone tries to say technicality means nothing.

Well, regardless of your technical skill you can't express anything without any musical skills, so it goes the both ways.

Hetfield is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever. That is undeniable but obviously Paul Gilbert is a way better lead player.

I have to say I am surprised SRV fell where he did. Hetfield is one bad ass rhythm guitarist but I think Stevie had the whole package like no other. Also I am a huge Page fan and understand why he makes the list but in reality
Jimmy Page
Studio work=Genius,
Songwriter=Outstanding
Live Performance=Sloppy Bastard

his riffs are SO boring. the whole band is just the same thing, over and over again.

To each their own. I find megadeth's riffs to be very boring most of the time. Metallica is definitely not the same thing over and over. Load and reload was a dip into bluesy hard rock, and load is one of their best albums IMO. Megadeth was at their best with Marty on rust in peace, and went way downhill after countdown.

I think the whole notion of "best" in the arts is ludicrous.
Music is polytheistic

+1, Nick.

Music is so subjective. My list of the top 50 guitarists would look nothing like this list. It depends so much on who you've listened to, which music genres you're into etc. Even if you divided guitarists into different styles (classical, jazz, rock, country, metal etc.) and tried to choose the best, you'd still have major disagreements. It's just a pointless exercise.

If were talking technical ability, Paul Gilbert should be in the top 5 easily. And wheres buckethead? laugh.gif

If were talking music, its all personal taste.

Did you see that year at Glastonbury when Dot Cotton played guitar biggrin.gif She should defo be in the list lol biggrin.gif

I think it's a better list than rolling stone and contains a lot of guitarists that definitely deserve their place somewhere in the top 50.
