For those of you trying to break out of a box, here's how the fretboard fits together. Forget about chords for a minute, until you understand this. The relative modes of G Major, first octave only. When played in order in this way, you can hear how they are "relative" to the key, in that it all sounds like it belongs. This has nothing to do with what chords go with what modes.
Please excuse my cramped location (in my truck, in Savannah, GA) and the resulting poor fingering. Edit: Included text from YouTube page. Thanks. I just hope it helps someone. It was a while after I had learned all the boxes that this was how they fit together. Prior to that, I just knew you played the boxes in order, I didn't understand why. When it was pointed out to me that each successive box started on the next note of the scale you were playing.. That was my Eureka moment.
My second Eureka moment had to do with sliding lead patterns, but I'll save that for another time. -------------------- "I dreamed a lot when I was younger.. Wow this has to be the ultimate guitar playing environment!! Cool lesson! Are you playing on your amp there, what is the power source for it ? I'm playing on a Pignose Hog 20, which is portable and rechargeable. I get AC power from an inverter plugged into the truck. -------------------- "I dreamed a lot when I was younger..
