Super congrats on being a father again and on your studio! Looks like a great space. The little one will get exposure to music from a very young age by being around when you practice/play/compose etc. it is said to help babies brains to grow, when they are exposed to music at a young age smile.gif

They say music runs in family smile.gif I suppose many traits follow along family lines. I do come from a long line of both musicians and teachers. Teaching also seems to run in families smile.gif

I saw a very interesting program about "passive listening" and young children. Basically, just listening to music, even before the child can understand it, helps to stimulate the brain and strengthen neuron pathways. So it's a positive thing to expose children to all kinds of music as it helps their brains to develop!

Also, exposing children to other languages can stimulate brain development as well. Just letting a child listen to a movie in french for example, can be a positive thing. Young minds adapt well to language and to music. Really, to anything. Young minds have a high degree of neuroplasticity. So the more music, foreign language, the better smile.gif I think it's great that your young one's place will be the same room as your studio! It will give many opportunities to be exposed to music that is being played/written/learned etc.

Congrats again!

Todd

Yeah thats nice so you are also raised with it. Then it be comes more easy to pick out an instrument and start playing i guess smile.gif

Yes i Saw that one too. There is also a vid in youtube where you can see how neural pathways start and develop and you can see it. Also how it dissapears if you Dont practice anymore.

Abiut the plasticity of a brain at young age. I think that is why if you start playing from a young age you can be so damn good because your brain works so great then without have to think so much.
Sometimes i wishes that i started playing earlier but its always easy to say afterwards smile.gif

Yeah smile.gif Music was always part of my life since before I could walk. MY folks loved music and both are musicians so music was on pretty much non stop. They both played piano and I was hopeless at it. Much to their chagrin, our local piano teacher declared me "unteachable" smile.gif Same thing went for the Violin Teacher and the Flute Teacher, sadly. I was the only child in the family who didn't end up getting trained on piano, flute and violin. I had to tech myself in the end which worked out )

It does hep when you can start young, especially if you are exposed to a lot of muisc at a young age. There are lots of great youtube vids on the subject of music and brain development. Starting them young helps their brains develop and gives them a bit of a leg up on getting better at music smile.gif

I grew up with my dad listening to a lot of music, but sort of being really tone-deaf. He's certainly not a musician and can't clap in time. I remember doing lights at a school show when I was 15 or 16, and I was sort of high up, able to watch all the parents as they clapped along to the song...except my dad who clapped on the wrong beats or off-beat from everyone else smile.gif

My mom don't really have an interest in music either and always complain she can't find the 1-2-3-4 in music when listening to it, even though I've explained it multiple times.

Maybe that explains my love for odd time signatures though wink.gif

Maybe your dad is more made for reggae with the upbeat style laugh.gif

your timing is spot on so you get double portion then smile.gif
What odd signatures do you like?

It's interesting regarding time signatures, because my approach to writing music is "melody first" (without a beat), and I never have a pulse in my head as such when I write. Sure, there can be strong notes that are accented and such, but I don't constantly feel a 4/4 pulse for instance. I might hear a melody in my head with varied note values, notate it and figure out that it's in 11/8 or similar, and then I'll write the drums around that melody. I have some friends that more "constantly and consciously think in 4/4", but I honestly don't, for better or worse. It can add something to get into a 4/4 groove from something odd though - a bit of both smile.gif

As said, I might a melody where some people would "force" it into a 4/4 bar or at least hear it that way. Sometimes I'll feel that a note naturally needs linger for longer or that a rest needs to be 5/8 instead of 2/4. It's very varied.

Here's an interesting take on it, from around 4:00:

So to answer your question, I don't really think I have one. It depends on the melody. Sometimes the melody will fit a 5/4, sometimes a 7/8, sometimes 11/8 or 15/16...

Nice method to write from the melody. Then you can afterwards see what time signature you used.
But if you then play it do you count it in your head or just go witj the flow?

I like syncopated rhythms like the clave or shifting accents in a funk track. Then with the funk the time signature is 4/4 but the feel is very different smile.gif

I suppose I figure out the melody length in my head if I need to. I.e. (Q=Quarter, E=Eight, S=Sixteen) "E+Q+S+S+E+Q = 7/8", but otherwise notating things is very quick for me. I've spent a lot of time with Guitar Pro over the years, so I can quickly notate my ideas and have a very good understanding of how to do smile.gif

I kinda made it sound like I never write in 4/4. I absolutely do, cause I know it can "groove" better, but my natural instinct is to write whatever melody I feel/hear, both as rhythm and more solo stuff, and not have it sit inside a strict rhythmic template.

I've attached one of my songs notated in Guitar Pro just as a showcase smile.gif

Anyone else got updated home studio pics? Ive got my home studio divided in two sections. One for working and experimenting with audio for movie type stuff/soundtrack bits, and one for doing guitar based music stuff.

It's a very spiff thing to have a home studio. I really like the look of your space! A dedicated studio loft is a wonderful thing! I like BENS as well. he's got an entire room devoted to music and recording. Mine has always been stuffed in to a bedroom smile.gif At some point, I might just take over the living room smile.gif

BEN Thats very cool indeed! have you done a full version of it yet? I really like when the keyboard harmonizes the guitar. At least I think it's a keyboard?
