Just out of curiosity, as I've been thinking about this these last couple of days. What is the definition of a lick? Length-wise etc?

Just out of curiosity, as I've been thinking about this these last couple of days. What is the definition of a lick? Length-wise etc? As far as I know you can consider a lick as "a combination of notes, often based out of scales or chords". It has no defined minimum number of bars/notes etc For this thread I think this 'definition' would suffice perfectly. It can be quite long, although you reach the point of it being kind of a solo maybe, but can also be ultra short (as long as they are cool I am fine with it ). -------------------- "Don't practice until you get it right. Cool. I seem to prefer making shorter licks, as that is kinda what I can comprehend doing at the moment. (I don't know...I'm feeling a bit off beat at the moment concerning all.) Good question, never thought of it I am kinda long. I will try to make some shorter ones. -------------------- Gear:

Good question, never thought of it I am kinda long. I will try to make some shorter ones. Don't worry man, your licks are fine ... indeed quite long, but I am happy with your contributions and we can just see them as several licks combined This post has been edited by Velvet Roger: Jan 16 2009, 12:52 AM -------------------- "Don't practice until you get it right. My pleasure. Might do a few more tonight.
I do hope for some more participants, as I don't want to be the only one keeping this one alive :-) |

My pleasure. Might do a few more tonight. I do hope for some more participants, as I don't want to be the only one keeping this one alive :-) Yeah, I have exactly the same feeling. I have quite a few licks I could share, however I don't want to select my own licks for the competition. I find it quite surprising that we only have 5 active participants with these member licks, whilst the enthousiasm was much bigger when the idea emerged a couple of months ago. I actually thought that I needed to choose from several entries every day, but currently I have to find and find until I have one that I did not select before . -------------------- "Don't practice until you get it right. I just came home now, and I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be able to record anything.
I don't mind you using your own licks, by the way :-) |
