Hi Gabriel In the Video you said to look at Ivan says the best way to figure out the key of a song is using modes . Which I don't know much about , So I am currently learning all the modes . So I might need a few extra days or more to learn and understand all the modes and then I will get right back to our project of analyzing songs ! which I am quite excited about ! I have always wanted to learn to analyze bands and styles Cool! I'm so glad of reading this mate! That's a great decision, please keep me updated. Here you have some more info: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...?showtopic=3160 and this video: -------------------- My lessons

First I found this one lesson on here and I completed that. But Alex told me to PM him and said he had something to show me about the modes . What lesson? I just saw your thread about modes.. there is great stuff there. Have you checked Cosmin's notes? -------------------- My lessons

The lesson was called learning the modes by David wallimman . It just showed the shapes and the Arpeggioes to go with them. I read the whole thread over ( including what Cosmin said ) and there is some great stuff there ! I will go back and read it again today . I am also going to do a little bit of theory so I know what modes have what notes . Because it sounds like thats what they all agree on . If you are going to play mode you have to know the different note or notes it has and then center your playing around that note ? Thats what I was kinda getting from it at least Exactly, that's the only way to get the mode's characteristic sound, the overall feel. Guthrie Govan shows very clearly how to get the mode's sound while improvising. (The video that I posted in that thread). -------------------- My lessons

I went and watched the video and it was a real eye opener. I think partially I have been trying to rush getting good on the guitar , and in doing so tried to just learn all the scale shapes without thinking about the different notes and stuff . In this one guitar book I have it says there are 2 ways to learn the modes 1 the derivative approach ( in which the mode is just a re-ordering of a major scale ) 2 The Parallel approach ( in which you learn the modes as an alteration of the major scale ) I think I need to learn them as an alteration and see how they are different from the Ionian mode . So right now I am learning the different notes that they have . Such as the Dorian mode has a flat 3rd and a flat 7th . So if I am trying to make a solo in a song that is the key of C and there is a dm chord I want to emphasize the flatted 3rd and 7th of the Dorian mode right ? Exactly, that's how I use the modes. You also have to emphasize the chord notes, (tonic, 3rd and 5th) when you are soloing. The way number one is the easy way to learn the modes, the number one is the way that is more useful and make more sense to exploit the modes. Regarding the Nickelback song,,, it's in Bm and it seems that they use standard tuning and maybe Drop D in any of the electric guitars. -------------------- My lessons

Oh my goodness I cannot believe I didn't get the Nickelback song right . My ear obviously needs alot of work !! thanks for finding the key for me. So what is the next step for me to analyzing styles and such ? Now I know the parts and the key and the tuning . Now let's go for the chord progressions of each part. -------------------- My lessons

How do I go about that ? Haha you have seen how my bad my ear is ! Is this the best way to train it though ? Just try and figure out the chords by ear? yes!! Let's try it. There is no problem with mistakes in this army. maybe this thread could help you because it's exactly about learning songs by ear. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=40304 -------------------- My lessons

yes!! Let's try it. There is no problem with mistakes in this army. maybe this thread could help you because it's exactly about learning songs by ear. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=40304 Thanks the thread helped lots !! Okay so by now you know how bad my ear is but I gave it my best shot For 45min and this is what I got . I am playing in drop D using 6th string rooted power chords There are only 2 guitar parts as far as I can tell . The intro and bridge are the same ,and the verse's and chorus's are the same ( I think ) As far as I can tell the Intro part is a F#-A-B-A-B-A-B. The verse and chorus is just F#-A repeating . Now judging on my past experiences this may not be right but I hope I am at least close . I was using diatonic chords of Bm. -------------------- Never miss an opportunity to play

Well, that's not right mate. The song is in Bm. The first chord that appears is B minor, try to play it over the song when it appears and notice that it sounds the same. Then your have other 3 chords in the introduction. So the progression would be
Bm - ? - ? - ? - and it's repeated many times. They are tuning in 440. Try to first find the bass note of each chord, playing just one note on the lower string to find the chord. Could you try to find those 3 chords? -------------------- My lessons
