It is best to use XP for now. Vista is a clumsy, buggy software that still needs a lot of refinement. I would install Vista when new Windows version arrives - in a year or two.
The downside of this is that (32bit) XP can map only 3GB of RAM, so if that's about you're gonna need in the next year or two, than go for XP. If you are positive that you will be using 4GB or more RAM, then install Vista I guess. Also if you do want Vista, take a great care to get all the components that are Vista ready, which means you have drivers for them, and they can work on Vista. A lot of hardware (and software for that matter) still cannot work with Vista so it is good to be cautious.
