You can always go for higher position for the thumb
since frets are smaller and you don't have to put your wrist much ahead like you do on lower frets specially when there's some stretching involved. At least that's what I do. -------------------- Youtube

I agree with what has been said here, just take it slowly and try to find the most comfortable position for your hand

For me it also depends on the guitar. On my Ibanez S it's much easier than on my Les Paul.
