Hey Everyone

Wanted to pass along this list of the Top 100 Jazz Guitar Albums as voted on by members of a jazz-guitar forum. Might be a good intro to the genre for those just starting to check it out, and I'm hoping it will spark some lively conversation for fans of jazz guitar on this site.

Interesting collection..I only have no.19, Django's Hot club de France! (I think I don't have any Benson, not sure about him)..My other Jazz albums are other instruments...like Jaco Pastorius,Charles Mingus, John Coltrane,Miles Davis, Charlie Parker...To name a few.... cool.gif

Thanks for posting that..I'll be having a listen to some of those.

That's a great album! If you dig Django, check out some of Martin Taylor's Gypsy stuff, very cool, or Birelli Lagrene's Gypsy albums, burning material!

Saw this already on jazzguitar.be and miss most of the albums I dig. The right guys are on here but I think the wrong albums of the right guys. Also too many old timers. Some important fusion stuff is missing.

Good point about the fusion albums. What are some of the albums you feel should be on there?

Giving this a bump to see if anyone else has comments on this list. Gotten some positive and negative shots going at it on various FB pages etc. What do you think?

His Billies bounce was actually what made me fall deeply in love with his playing. Always seemed like his favorite tune. Shame hes really not all that well known in North America

I think he's known a bit, at least among jazz fans, but you're right, he's bigger over here in Europe than back in NA. At least for now!

Fun to read. I have a love/hate relationship with lists like that wink.gif
If Elegant Gypsy and Metal Fatigue (both great! by the way) get to make the top two on a 'jazz' list then it needs to include some Mahavishnu Orchestra and either Blow by Blow or Wired from Jeff Beck (these are way jazzier than most of the 'fusion' that is listed).

I would add Belgian guitarist Rene Tomas (gigged and recorded with most of the touring american 'greats' when they were in Europe) also Gabor Szabo, Mark Ribot, Lonnie Johnson, Bill Connors (RTF - IMO much cooler than Al D. in that band), Eldon Shamblin and Jimmy Wyble (Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys - highly innovative and influential). And where the hell is Chet Atkins? What, he's not as jazzy as Al DiMeola or Holdsworth - ?

*Also, a small point - 'Smokin at the Half-Note' is not a Wes record. It's a Wynton Kelly album that (Wes plays on).

I think Rene should have been on there, but he tends to be overlooked for some reason by the casual listener. The only cats that I've met who are into his playing are die-hard fans of jazz guitar. Not sure why that is, but he's just always kind of been under the radar a bit. Monster player, love his records and wish he got more deserved attention.
