Hi bucket! Welcome to our thread for Gab's Army.

I will share here your info to have it as reference:

"I've been working on two GMC lessons the past few , Your In Flames lesson, and Darius Wave's Alternate Picking Workout 2 and after spending about three hours on each of them I can play them at the slowest backing track speed with a couple mistakes(I clearly need to spend a lot more time on them before they're in any presentable shape).
days
Lessons of that level are about as simple as I can get in terms of my interests(simpler lessons really bore me) but higher level lessons prove fairly difficult for me. I don't have much theory knowledge. I know most of the open chord shapes but not all of them. The only scale shape I'm very familiar with is the first octave of the major scale, the one with the fingering 2-4/1-2-4/1-3-4(used in the aforementioned alternate picking lesson). I have a very limited amount of time to practice each day because of my job(maybe two hours max, and that's really optimistic) and I would really appreciate some guidance on how to use that time to its fullest.

In terms of my goals, I want to be a very well rounded musician, but my primary long term goal is to be able to perform and write interesting instrumental compositions (things like Dream Theater's "Erotomania" or this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt8JpGLtpGY). I honestly don't know what my short term goals should be though, and would like some guidance on how to get there.
"

You have a very defined long term goal that will be our target for the future works. We need to work on your technique, as well as some theory to develop your composition skills. DT music is very advanced but there are some basics that you need to learn in order to be able to analyze their music and create your own ideas in that progressive metal style.

The journey is not short but I think that you should be able to compose your first prog metal tunes in around 5 months if you work 2 hours every day on technique and some theory and scales.

I was thinking on a routine like this one for the first week:

Warming up (7 minutes)

Alternate Picking (30 minutes)

Rhythm (30 minutes)

Scale work (30 minutes)
Module 1
