Try Reaper, it's got an unlimited evaluation period. Wanto to buy it it'll cost only $50. For professional use it's $200.

Other than Reaper there is KRISTAL. It's very similar to Cubase, but a lot simpler. It's free of course.

I don't have any experience with reaper or any other free recording software, but I can definitely recommend Pro Tools Before switching to Pro Tools I was using Logic for some years, it is alsop a good software, even though I definitely prefer Pro Tools.

I have Ableton Live 7 Lite which I got with my UX1 is it better or worse than reaper? Both are very good sequencers but achieve their end results in slightly different ways since they start from a differing perspective. Some functions Reaper does better, some Ableton: but you can't really say that Reaper is 'better' overall then Ableton, or vice versa, they are just different and have a different concept and approach.
