This song is really one of my favourite one's from the 80's. I became a little upset with Mr.Bonamassa covers it, since I did it for years when he still tried to cover SRV...
Anyway, Bonamassas version is awesome as well as the original one, so this is kind of a mix between them I suppose. (Joe did change the chords in the verse's comparing to the original) I must also say that Tony Miro did a great job to master this one into a more vintage sounding song!!!! Enjoy! (and as usual, all comments are welcome, good or bad, it doesn't matter... ) //Staffay EDIT: Oh, I forgot the recording details: Brian Moore guitar through my Tweed deluxe clone, with some DS1-distorsion added from my Boss-OD-20 Trilian bass & Superior Drums Cubase 5.1 RÖDE NTK for vocals 3 mics for guitar, 2 SM57 and RÖDE as ambience TC-Powercore for effects Thats about it.... Just on the playing and having listened to the take quite a few times - some great guitar playing from Staffay.
I hadn't heard Joe Bonamassa's version before talking to Staffay - though we've had the Sam Brown cd for years. I think Staffay did a really good job of referring to both versions whilst still making it his own. Staffay's original studio recording was a good clean take to work on as well good tracking, mixing and levels with plenty of head room for me as ME. Mastering equipment FWIW: Lavry Blue AD/DAC/DAC, Ibis EQ, STC8M, Flux Pure Limiter. Main aim - to emulate a master to saturated analogue 1/2 inch tape master. I was aiming at Joe Bonamassa's version as the reference. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. I was aiming at Joe Bonamassa's version as the reference. It seems obvious now when we made this, Tony, that in order to get a full analogue sound in a digital format some more investments have to be done. This one was made with programmed drums & bass, however I find the lack of warmth in digital equipment stunning ( at least at the semi-pro level I'm recording at). I think I will invest in a real good tube-preamp/2 channel strip (which also the mix can run trough in order to get some more warmth beforew mastering). Have You got any suggestions that won't totally ruin me??? //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. I think it sounds great, this song is excellent, and you covered it so cool Staffay. Great stuff, very pleasant for listening! I don't know how the original sounded, but it seems tony did his magic again here!

Wow, I haven't heard original in such a long time, it's such an awesome song! Yeah, it really is! When I first heard it back in 88' I though: "Wow, this must be a cover of a late 60's/70's song that I missed". And then it became a huge hit, what was also verys strange amongst all Milli-Vanillis, Pet Shop Boy's and Stock-Aitkens-Waterman hit factory artists such as Rick Astley.... *huuuuhh, i'm shakin by just writing his name.....* We used to cover this song in the original version, with guitar instead of organ solo, since the keyboard-player was classical trained (nothin bad bout that, though) and couldn't find a blue note if he so would use the whole stage lightnin' to look for one..... As most of this songs I really love to play, this has also a story to me, since I was deeply in love with the singer in the band, and she later left me for my replacement in the band when I got tirad of touring, so the lyrics are kinda spot on to me, since I felt very cheated back then... Btw. I did some research on Sam Brown when I was struggling with this one, and she is happy married with four(!) children and lives in Wales I believe - what guy dares to cheat on her after she wrotes THIS song????? //Staffay -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans. ... I think I will invest in a real good tube-preamp/2 channel strip (which also the mix can run trough in order to get some more warmth beforew mastering)... //Staffay Mic pre-amp - I'm a fan of Neve generally and they have both the 1070 and 1080 mic pres. Chandler do some good hardware Neve clones that cost a fair bit less than an AMS Neve. A little different to an AMS Neve are the Rupert Neve mic pres - still very similar to the AMS but has a character of its own. Also good are the APi strips and the pro end Focusrite (i.e the Red etc). Less of a traditional vibe(ie less 1970s/early80s, more 1980s-1990s) but also worth looking at are the SSl strips. If you want a tube based mic pre then maybe Avalon. For a reasonable/good 2 channel mic pre/strip you'll probably have to budget 1-3K Euros. Summing mixer - an analogue summing desk/unit could sit across the outs of your digital console and sum down to a stereo mix or you could take the feed out of your DAW as separate channels on the aux in to the summer and then sum to a stereo main and back into the DAW. It's a bit debatable as to what extent summing actually helps though. Neve have a nice summing desk as do SSL. Be aware though that I think both use Tascam D-Subs i/o. Just on Sam Brown - if I remember correctly she's the singer/song writer Joe Brown's daughter. She spent a lot of time as a backing singer prior to writing and recording Stop! ... did his magic again here! Thanks Ivan and UncleSkillet . Just as a bit of a silly aside - some time ago my daughter had to write an essay on what her parents do for a living. She wrote a nice but pretty obvious bit about my wife as a radio producer and then struggled to explain my role as an ME. She ended up writing that 'my dad is the guy who sprinkles magic dust on a cd to make it sound good.' So there we have it to master your stuff just get a big supply of magic dust . -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. Just on Sam Brown - if I remember correctly she's the singer/song writer Joe Brown's daughter. She spent a lot of time as a backing singer prior to writing and recording Stop! Thats true, nowadays she's a voice instructor in London and works with her father as well as Jools Holland , I think. But she made several records since that one, I havent got the time to check them out though. She's just a fantastic singer!!!! So there we have it to master your stuff just get a big supply of magic dust . Hehe, kids are just wonderful!!!! But as long as the dust doesn't get up Your nose, everything is OK, I believe!!! -------------------- Guitars: Ibanez AM-200, Ibanez GB-10, Fender Stratocaster Classic Player, Warmouth Custom Built, Suhr Classic Strat, Gibson Les Paul Standard 2003, Ibanez steel-string Amps: Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, Marshall JMP 2103, AER 60 Effects: BOSS DD-20, Danelectro Trans.
