Hello, I'm Kyle, a new member here.
I have owned a guitar for 1 yr and a half, but am serious about playing now. I like the band dream theater, trans siberian orchestra, rush, and classic rock, metal & also contemporary christian.
Guitar influences include john petrucci, paul gilbert, y. malmsteen, michael angelo, alex lifeson, chris caffery..

I have a gibson les paul studio & I haven't changed the strings. I would like some advice about which strings I should go with. I would like strings that are good for metal, prog, rock, & playing for speed, while still being somewhat versatile for other sounds.

Thanks biggrin.gif Kyle

Hey man, try out the Ernie Ball Hybrid 10's, theyre called Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom and have higher strings that are 10 guage and low strings that are 11 guage to get the best of both worlds! Easier soloing up top and tight riffing on the bottom biggrin.gif

Hey, I like pillar as well. I really like Neal Morse, he a Christian prog rock artist, mike Portnoy is their drummer. I highly recommend it. I also like some old school relient k and jars of clay, Jesus Culture, Hillsong United & planetshakers.

Welcome smile.gif

I love elixir strings myself, they last forever and don't ever get rusty.

Great influences! I have done some Petrucci style lessons. Regarding strings, I think that the best gauge would be 010. There are lots of brands out there.. Ernie Ball is very good, I personally use D'addario with great results.

Enjoy the site and let us know if you need some help!

Gab.-

Hello there mate! smile.gif Welcome to GMC! smile.gif Great influences right there, and great guitar you have. Studio version is just awesome. If you need some heavier gauge strings, why not, just need to determine what tuning you play with. Here are some general guidelines, but you can experiment with gauge (it doesn't have to be exactly this):

If you play with E standard, then 10-46
If you play with drop D, then 10-50
If you play with Eb tuning, then 11-49
If you play with drop C, then 11-52

These are mostly hybrid sets, which means bass strings are thicker than usual to provide good balance between playing riffs and doing lead. Try to experiment and see what you can come up with. I've been using Daddario for long time now for E standard, Eb standard and drop D, and they work nicely.

Great to see you on the forum, Kyle smile.gif

Definitely some great advice from the guys. However I'd just like to throw in the option of 9-42 in there as well. I use Ernie Ball 9-42 and they give me everything I need and I'm all about metal ! smile.gif

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up going with the ernie ball hybrid skinny top/heavy bottom this time. I think they are 10-52?
I use standard tuning unless what I'm playing requires a de-tuning.

i been using Starndard E - 0'12 - 0'52 (SG )

i manage to achive a better control on alt/speed and sync both hands, took me a week, but i can make one whole step bend again(yet is impossible to bend bellow 4 fret), my vibrato is still quite dead also hammer ons and pull offs, go to work on that, but i got a better tune and a boost on my finger strength.

but hey son goku also trained with weights

this is my hardcore training setup, when is not in hardcore mode is in Drop C

my normal setup is hybrid 0'10 Dunlop/Ernie Ball (jackson guitar)
