Hello folks,
After reading THIS thread, I decided I'd like to try out loopback function, my Focusrite 18i8 2nd gen didn't have the function, there was a work around using the SDIF sockets but it was a faff so I went and ordered an 18i8 3rd gen. It was due on Monday but came today, shout out to Andertons, great company. Anyway, when researching loopback, and Focusrite, I came across THIS article by Focusrite saying to ONLY connect a mic to the xlr socket, I've always used the xlr from my Line 6 Relay into the XLR input on the Focusrite, I also did the same in stereo from my Helix. Anyway, I thought I'd better heed their advice and I bought a couple of THESE If I switch INST on, even with gain all the way down I get hum, even with the guitar volume down. Any ideas? Should I go back to XLR or get a different adapter or cable? If I use the 1/4 out from my Relay it is fine and works how you would expect. Thanks folks. Sorry,
The Relay has two outputs, xlr and 1/4 jack. I use the 1/4 jack to feed my Boss TU3 and from there it goes to my Fender amp but it means that the tuner can be always on. I use the xlr output to go into my Scarlett. When I use the adaptor and switch to INST there is a constant hum giving a signal even with guitar volume down. Later on this evening or tomorrow I'll do a test with the 1/4 out from the Relay and Scarlett set to INST and the xlr with INST off. Thanks for looking Mertay -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. ... One of the pins on XLR is ground shielding which is likely the reason you get hum wih line but yeah try all possibilities. |

Here are two recordings, same setting, both had the interface set to INST (not sure if it does anything when using xlr). To be honest I can't hear a difference, can you? Both tracks have a clean scale run then an effected scale run. https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/xlr https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/jack This post has been edited by Phil66: Feb 27 2021, 09:33 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Yeah ideally inst. option only applies for line-in, working like a DI-Box. Please explain when you have time buddy. The XLR third pin is ground so it cancels hum but I gather you knew this? XLR is a "balanced" connection, where as guitar cable is "unbalanced". It's usually fine over short cable runs though whether balanced or un balanced. Thanks buddy, so am I safe sticking to xlr? I kinda knew but don't really understand it.
I've sent them back, it was weird, they didn't hum when first put in, the hum kinda faded in after about ten seconds of plugging them in. I tried it a few times because I tried both adapters in different sockets and with different cables. The XLR third pin is ground so it cancels hum but I gather you knew this? Could be something unrelated like noise on your mains from lighting or another appliance, or RFI from your computer/screen.
Also Phil what are you doing that you need the 18i8? That's a lot of inputs!! -------------------- My SoundCloud

Also Phil what are you doing that you need the 18i8? That's a lot of inputs!! It is but you can't use 18 at once, for instance the front 8 are actually 4 dual xlr/jack the ones on the back are spdif and midi and some others. For my use, it's only got four inputs really, apart from the midi on the back. To save any faffing around I like to have my SM57 permanently on my amp, (for when I want to record my amp), my condensor mic ready for acoustic and the other two, I used to have my Helix connected in stereo but now it's just the Relay. My thought process is, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, also this way, I'm good to go whatever I want to record which is great when time is limited. I've had all the generations of the 18i8, love them Cheers -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. That's true
I hate having to get the gain correct between vocal mics and Ax8 and acoustic just having two XLR inputs -------------------- My SoundCloud
